I think the measurements have a little value but the people there are so unlikeable I rarely visit that site. The lining up of products by SINAD at a point far beyond audibility is an annoying obsession with trivia. They make almost no attempt to relate the measurements to listening experience or audibility. They seem like the kind of people that if you met one in person you'd want to give him a wedgie and stuff him in a locker.
Is ASR for real, or is it only for those sub $1k or even sub $2K?
I did some browsing on the forum and it seems like most don't own very expensive gears. Most of them own mostly sub 1K or 2K gears.
I recently ask about feedback on the Polk R700 but after about a month with no responds. I did a search "ASR Polk R700", with all but one poster which actually owned a pair. Most of them would point you to some measurement and some theoretical discussion but non actually own a pair.
I also looked at a few posts on budget speakers such as the Kef Q7 or Polk R600, but I didn't see any actual owners responding.
I don't mean to knock on them but ASR seems like a lot of hype but very little substance.

@markwd you’ve spent about three pages of discussion here playing a game of “bring me another rock”. Now I’d like to reverse that and ask you to bring some rocks to the discussion to help ground your criticisms of @mahgister’s perspectives. I noticed you don’t have a system listed on your information page so I am curious what your background is as a listener, and how that might influence your perceptions of what defines good sound to you, where you personally choose to make your investments, and what specifically you believe is to be avoided. 1. Are you a regular listener to hifi gear? Headphones? Speakers and amps? Multi-channel systems? 2.What is your preferred source(s), analog or digital? 3. What are the particulars of your setup that seem like reasonable steps to improve performance, shelving, room treatments, AC supply, connecting cables, anything? 4. Is there a system you’ve heard at an industry show, dealer showroom, or friend’s house that really floated your boat? If so, what was it about that system that appealed to you? What was the setup if you recall? 5. If I tracked this thread correctly, I believe you mentioned that you were undertaking an effort to expose or debunk audio gear, or tweaks being marketed with false claims and under dubious supporting principles. What are the categories of products that you will be evaluating, and how do you plan to carry out those evaluations? It would be helpful to understand where you are coming from and what your personal experience is beyond reading and supporting ASR. We are all pretty familiar with where Mahgister stands and how he practices what he preaches in his own system and listening. He is an open book with many pages. You, not so much. Thanks in advance for filling in any of these gaps so we can fully understand your approach and convictions as you enter into these discussions. This is after all, a largely subjectivist and in-room experience forum, and as such it helps to speak the language. kn |
We could well heed the words of Byrne and Callaghan. ”Complexity theory can, however, take us beyond paradigmatic difference in a way that allows previously warring practitioners of quantitative and qualitative methods to find reconciliation, assuming their place as contributing to understanding a world that cannot be reduced to its constituent elements.” |
Acoustics already is a very complex field rooted in objective measures about perceptions and their physical external modifications parameters, it is also rooted with psycho-acoustics in subjective perceptions for themselves taken seriously as a field of study in itself (speech, music,). The division between subjectivist and objectivist (ASR) is ridiculous but the more ridiculous is the one cult who by partial educated ignorance claim to eliminate hearing subjectivity from the acoustics equation instead of training it and who use the Fourier tools whose limits of application in psycho-acoustics context they dont understand .
