Recommendation on speakers for listening to live music
For amplified live music ATC is hard to beat.  They're better at high volume.   They also manage bass better than most brands.  This is one of those things that you need to experience and live with long enough to stop being emotional about it.  A...
Just received my B&W 802's: One tweeter doesn't work - HELP!
There is a tiny wire to the coil and since the coil moves the wire constantly flexes and eventually will break.  It may be visible, maybe need a magnifying class.  My guess is that it's not fixable, at least not without specialized tools.  I've ha...
Bang & Olufsen beolab 90 $115,000 Pair
I haven't listened to them and I wouldn't if I had the opportunity.  They're a product priced at a point where they don't have to compete.  And that's the point I think.  Competition avoidance.  It's super uninteresting.  Throw in a bunch of crazy...

luxury = marketing to idiots.  It's selling the sizzle with no steak.  It's been around a long time.     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Bernays
The new dynamic in speaker pricing
They're far too expensive for any dealer to have demo models so hardly anyone has ever heard them.  That means they don't have to perform well.  Someone with a lot of money who wants "the best" will buy them regardless of performance and some smal...

tomthiel - they sound great in bad rooms.  I put my 2 2s in a reflective living room in a townhouse.  It was a second system, not something I put effort into.  Yeah, if you stand a foot away and change elevation you can hear dramatic changes.  Oth...
Thiel Owners
Maybe some Thiels are bright but a big chunk of that is about something else.  Maybe personal or political or oven some sort of ethnic thing.  They're mostly not bright and mostly not that hard to drive.  My 2 2s were slightly warm hooked up to a ...
What's the heaviest speaker you've ever owned? What's the tallest?
I got a pair of custom ATC 110s from a classified ad.  They're around 15" tall and 100 lbs a piece.
What does a subwoofer solve?
This has probably already been said but a sub, or subs, can solve the problem of placement.  The best location for bass is unlikely to be the bast place for the rest of the spectrum.  In my opinion the ideal situation is to have large speakers wi...
Thiel Owners
3.7s have the crossover housed in a little compartment in the bottom separate from the main box.  Thiels are "small signal systems" but they're so good at it.  My guess is that nobody alive today could design a better version of the 3.7s for anywh...
Vandersteen Speakers.. Are All Other Speaker Makers Doing It Wrong ?
A lot of people think so.  It just depends on what is important to you.  I'm never selling my Thiels.  I can't be sure that I like them because of the time/phase coherence but I have no interest in changing.  There's a lot of discussion of this on...

Maybe it's my imagination but it seems like there's way more Thiel than usual on ebay right now.
What is the best HEAVY METAL speaker?
I've got a pair of ATC 110s and it's hard to imagine anything better for loud, amplified music.  They can play very loudly without distorting.  I doubt anything can compete with their combination of high volume, low distortion, and excellent in-ro...
"Slam"--what is it, is it really accurate?
Big drivers in a big box.  The bass drivers need to have a high cutoff.  A big subwoofer with stand mounts can play 20hz-20khz but won't have slam.  The surface area of the woofer is the key.
Passive vs Active...Again!
In my experience the thing that makes the biggest difference in room integration is the size of the midrange.  A small midrange won't beam the way larger ones do.  The ATC models that use the 3" dome midrange, for example, are very easy to integra...
