Needing to replace thirty year old speakers.

I was just in an Audio store (Quicksilver) in Kennewick, WA a few days ago and noticed that they had a pair of SVS Ultra Evolution Pinnacle speakers ($5k per pair) so I asked to listen to them. They sounded absolutely wonderful. Clear, fast, dynamic, with a prodigious amount of bass. Imaging was excellent. I hate to gush about these speakers but I can't help myself. I've been to three audio shows and have heard dozens of high end speakers but I've never heard anything for $5k that sounded as good as these. If they would have cost $30k I wouldn't have batted an eye.

If there's any way you can take a road trip to hear these I strongly recommend it. To my ears they set a new standard for affordable speakers.

One more thing. If there's any way you can swing it, I would highly recommend that you go to an audio show. AXPONA (Chicago) is coming up in April and it's a great experience, especially if you are in the market for new gear. There's no better way to get a sense of what you like and don't like in audio sound.

Answering soix. I’ve seen some great reviews of the ProAc D20r. How would these compare the Mofi 888? Who sells the ProAc D20r?

Lemme put it this way, IME and IMHO the ProAcs are well worth the 7+ hour drive to go hear at the Denver/Boulder dealer I linked previously — that’s what I’d sure do if I was you.  Honestly, I’d be surprised if you heard them and didn’t buy them — they’re that good.  And in the scheme of things it’s not all that big of an investment considering how long you’re likely to hang on to the speakers, so wouldn’t it be worth it to be sure?  And like I said, they’ve got other nice brands in your price range (and well above) from Revival Audio, Dynaudio, etc. so could be very enlightening/interesting to hear other stuff while you’re there.  Ok, that’s all I got.  Here’s the link again…

As for how the ProAcs compare to the 888s I really can’t say as I’ve never heard them.  From the reviews I read they seem very good but maybe not the last word in 3D soundstage/depth (but very good width) where the ProAcs excel along with balance, naturalness, and an amazing disappearing act that are up with the best I’ve heard and what makes them special, at least to my ears.  But that’s just an educated guess so take that for what it’s worth. 

@mbruflodt25  Buy something good and enjoy them during the near endless cold and darkness of Wyoming winters.  Those winters are gorgeous and deadly all wrapped into one unique package.  Don't forget the drive-up liquor stores.  Ya baby.

So many choices, If you want big sound those SVS monsters recently reviewed by stereophile are $5k, those DALI oberons are $2500 and DALI likely has a line that's a step above that'll eat your whole budget and offer a bit more detail. If you have a dark room or rolled off amp Paradigm offers some decent speakers for the money. If you like the ASR forum the folk on that site will tell you the Revel f208 or KEF R11m, and they're not bad, but when we get to that level often speakers get more sensitive to amplification,  If I were you i'd want the ability to return whatever I buy within a reasonable amount of time in case you run into poor room acoustics or poor component pairing.
