High current amp search

Hello, so as the title says, I'm looking for a 200+ wats amp (8ohm) that will double it's power down to 2 ohms but importantly also check all the audiophile boxes so strong, articulate, fast bass, smooth resolving mid-range and extended non fatiguing highs. It's proving to be rather difficult because hardly any manufacturers list  output into 2ohms. Budget is around 4000$ so I'm looking at mostly used. Besides something like the Krell FPB 300/400 CX which can be had for that much , what else can be recommended?

Dear @lukaszwk  : " I DON’T have problems integrating my sub and my speakers. i said clearly they integrate beautifully. This whole thread is about suggestions for high current application. Btw I will run my speakers full range and supplement the deep bass with a subwoofer because that works the best.  "

I can’t be in disagreement with you because that " integrating..... suplement deep bass... " is what you like and that’s why you insist with that HC amp.

In reality what you are suplementing through that subs running with the main speakers in full range fashion are only higher DISTORTIONS not only IMD but THD.

I don’t care about because I’m not who have to live with but you are. Fine with me.

Btw, I don't know which subs are " suplementing " deep bass in your system and the only additional comment I can do is that your subs are far far away of that 0.5% THD in the Velodyne ones.  The Magico stand alone subs has that kind of extreme low THD and each unit set you back 80K: go figure !

Atmasph, it depends which subs you are using and its room position, I’m crossing the HP filter ( directly in my Levinson monoblocks at its input card. ) around 80hz but I could run at 100hz and at least in my system you can’t detect those subs sound reproduction position.

@drmuso  I used for years the Classé DR 3-VHC that in those times was the only amp along big Krell to honor the Apogee Scintilla that goes down 1.2 ohm and with very dificult impedance curve and medium to low sensitivity. Even today great amps those Classé.

@lukaszwk  I have never seen independent measurements of amplifiers that can double the power when impedance is halved, the manufacturers always seem to underrate the 8ohm measurement to achieve it.

@invalid yes, I realize that but some come closer than the others. At least the ones that were designed to do so in the first place. Most are not.

@rauliruegas Of course! The advice I give on forums tends to be generalized so if its taken seriously it will not lead to problems. In a smaller room than yours 100Hz could be problematic especially if the slope isn’t particularly steep.

@invalid

Maybe you should have read my post about the Krell FPB 600.

You’re right though, the Krell’s power does not double at each halving of impedance. 970W @ 8 ohm should get 7760W @ 1 ohm, yet in reality it only managed 6000W.

Here are the independent measurements:

Any amp whose manufacturer specs don’t include a 2 ohm rating (not just a "stable into 2 ohm" note) should be considered suspect as far as being a high-current amp.

That doesn’t mean such an amp cannot do a lovely job driving easy-to-drive speakers. It’s a question of choice.
