Preference for speakers that are half the price. Has this ever happened to you?

Hello everyone,

A retailer near my home has some ex-demo Sonus Faber Aida 2 speakers for sale. I went to listen to them, and to my surprise, I preferred the sound of the Sonus Faber Il Cremonese Ex3me, which cost half the price of the Aida 2 when new. The amplifiers were the same (The Gryphon), which cost much more than the speakers themselves, and the location was basically the same (I even listened to them in two different locations).

I wonder how it's possible that I prefer the sound of speakers that are so much cheaper (even if they're not cheap!). Could it be that the amplifier isn't right for me? Or something else?

Is this something you've experienced before? Have you ever heard very high-end speakers that you found inferior to cheaper speakers? I'm hesitating to ask to go back and listen to them again.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Thank you all for your responses!

After doing some research (I'm relatively new to the world of audio and don't yet have a good grasp of the vocabulary), I realize that the words that best describe what I felt are "analytical vs. musical": I felt that the Aidas (or the amplifier that was being used?) had too much detail for me and sounded "analytical" (I even spontaneously used this word without knowing that it was used in the world of audio), and that the Il Cremonese sounded more "musical."

I don't know if it's a question of speakers or amplifiers or just personal preference, but I made an appointment to go back and listen to them again. Also with other amplifiers.

In any case, thank you for all this feedback, it's very much appreciated!

OP,

You are on to one of the most important distinctions (to me) in the audio world. Musicality... natural sound. It is so easy to get wrapped up into detail and slam that you loose the... technicallly. mid-range bloom and rhythm / pace. If you do, the system becomes analyitical sounding.

How musical the system is, is the result of every component, not just the speakers. But speakers are really important . Sonus Faber are know to produce some of the very best musical speakers. Electronics from Conrad Johnson, Audio Research, VAC and others produce very musical components, with appropriate levels (like that in real music_ details.

You may spend a lot, empty your wallet in audiophilia just to find out (gain the knowledge about) where the giant killers hide for your specific tastes.

For example, a 12k pair of horns and a horn loaded sub (~6k), total of ~18k beats the crap out of speakers priced 100k and above for my preferences these days. But, i’ve spent a 100k on a pair of speakers in the past easily to even get that point of reference...didn’t know better

Don’t worry so much about ’analytical’, ’musical’, coherence, soundstage, etc...all that jargon. You could even keep the vocabulary as simple as....."I like it"...."I like it better"....."I don’t like it"..."i like it less"....etc, no biggie

Your tastes can also mutate as the years go by....So, make some friends, go by their houses and live vicariously through them until you’re really sure what floats your boat, buy used, try to cut even when you sell it, etc..... The latter is the type of solution to maintain fullness of the wallet.

You should be able to enjoy audiophilia, but, also maintain fullness of the wallet...They are not mutually exclusive.

Thank you all for your responses!

We must focus on acoustics concepts and experiments not on "taste"...

Our taste dont "mutate" erratically, if they did dont let them rule, our ears training mature by acoustics training and musical education (all is not equal) ...We rule over our tastes by increasing in consciousness and knowledge...

Acoustics vocabulary has nothing to do with marketing vocabulary ...

For sure it is easier to buy a 100,000 bucks speakers than understanding how to optimize one at any price...But money cannot buy knowledge...Only the boxes...
