I would say that digital photography went through a vaguely similar transition. I think it was a bit quicker. I missed the early transition... but I was deep into digital photography since around 1998. I was into film photography from 1968 through 1985. I have 130,000 photos. One of the parts I was aware of was the "Leica Look" discussions (~2016ish). To make a long story short... endless discussions whether the Leica Look was a real thing and if it truly was more like analog. I got an Leica M10 and after a year of shooting concluded that there was something very different... and in a way more analog. It was that the dark tones were expanded in contrast to other digital cameras... and their incredible lenses were made to focus wide open... instead of in the middle like f8. The combination offered to bring out photos of rich tones with great nuances and you could control the blurring to make them romantic. The combination is really powerful. So you could take photos of clouds on a dark day and have incredible nuanced detail... as opposed to most cameras which tended to be dark and light... that’s it. As a consequence my Leica is by far my favorite camera although I still use my Nikon (with about every lens) and my FujiPro (with about every lens made). So, I suspect that the photographic transition was similar. Digital tended to be absolutely linear in representing the spectrum and not bring nuances to some of the spectrum that are particularly appealing to humans... and the contrast could be disconcerting. Now, like in audio, the problem has been worked and you can get better digital. A lot of audio equipment lacked rich bloomed midrange which is where much of human voices are and sensitivity. The tinny sound with slam may be detailed and accurate... but not warm and satisfying like analog tends to be.

Digital Photography vs Analogue Photography is where the user of the Camera/Lens is to manage light to create a negative, that can be converted into a medium. The user of a device is the initial creator of the medium that can be produced, i e, the Photo. Digital Recorded Music vs Analogue Recorded Music is where the Medium is already produced, their is no creativity from the user of the Medium. The Electrical Energy required to create sound is either born from embedded code or a embedded form referred to as modulus. I am not seeing anything but two very different technologies when there are notions proposed Photography and Replaying Music are with similarities.
Digital Art as a Medium vs Traditional Art Mediums, I can understand where a debate can develop, as disciplines to create become very very similar. |
