You were on the right track, don’t let ’good/better/best theory dissuade you. If avoidance of potential problems was the rule, we would all be listening to Direct Drive Linear Tracking with P Mount Cartridges with captive phono cables.

Theoretical ’better’ takes away exactly what you want, alternate cartridges ready to enjoy. Just make sure every connection is done right, keep your options, learn and get good/quick at mount/align/adjustments. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you will occasionally change fixed mount cartridges, Based on nearly 50 years of involvement with Vinyl, I would bet money once you get a darn good cartridge mounted, your not readily changing it.

I highly prefer and recommend removable over fixed mount, combined with the few inexpensive tools and skills needed. The cartridge differences: various stylus shapes/cantilever material is far more important than removable/fixed connection. I’ve recently replaced two ’fixed’ arms with ’removable’,

I had to repair both side arms, but it was worth it for the freedom gained. I couldn’t be happier, and my cartridges reveal their differences.

Getting arm height adjusted for VTA and Rotation of arm tube or rotation of headshell fitting, rotation of azimuth adjustable headshell on it’s neck, or dreaded shims in fixed arms for correct Azimuth is very important, that is what I liked about the Technics 1500 model I came across that is new and fits your budget, leaving you some money for a better cartridge.

That 1500’s Auto lift at end of play (defeatable) is wonderful. I need to get my AT auto lift gizmo set for the replacement arm, I’ve been lazy. It’s for the right side arm, was working for the 12.5" long arm in the top photo; it’s in the bottom photo, but not adjusted correctly yet.

however, I hadn't noticed, the arm lift/lower seems to be a stubby thing, not smooth evidently, as per a member who tried one:

I have owned a Technics 1500C, thought it was a bit of a tank and the queing was abysmal. Deal breaker for me but a decent TT.

You will receive a plethora of turntable recommendations but of the 3 you have mentioned the MoFi UltraDeck would be an easy decision. Don't rule out the Master Deck when thinking of a long-term investment. Consider upgrading to a tube phono stage with cartridges from Denon/Grado/Goldring and Nagaoka. If considering a MC the Shelter 501 III will add warmth with details and subtle nuances at a very reasonable cost.

I had the Audio Technica AT120 for years in between my Thorens TD-124 and my current JVC setup. 

I recommend it as a budget start TT, get a better cartridge; prove you will stick with Vinyl, and the next logical step up is a Technics that fits the budget.

OP might get lucky with a used SL-1300G from a member here, I found the SL-1500.

In any case, I never liked the look of them, and occasionally post info about wood surrounds that I would add IF I chose one.

This one is solid Walnut, costs $790., a good bit more than others, what I noticed is the list of Models it fits. Of course that would need to be confirmed if buying from a different maker, but here’s the link and list of models they say it fits

@joby15200  If you're willing to consider used, an '80s SOTA Star Sapphire with an Eminent Technology ET-2 tonearm might be in your price range, if you can find this combo.  The ET-2 has a removeable arm.  However, it is finicky to set the tracking force if you expect to switch cartridges often.  I wouldn't recommend that arm for someone who frequently switches cartridges.  There might be other arms that would be better for that situation.

The SOTA  has a vacuum hold-down platter that will flatten minor LP warps.  I've had mine for about 35 years, and it's had no problems.  Was a Class A turntable in the Stereophile Recommended Components.  I seriously doubt that any new TT in your price range could compete with a SOTA Star.

Recommending 35+ year old turntables and tonearms is very irresponsible and not practical.
