Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Listening to some Metheny tonight , and was wondering, why is "First Song (for Ruth)" not a standard? Does it deserve to be?

Does this change your mind?

I think any order for Rok's list would be ok with me, but would add Armstrong's original version was 30 years before Preservation's version so who is copying who?

The video hid itself above, by itself. Very fitting though.

Enjoyed this one,

Rok, Please put your heart medicine beside the computer BEFORE clicking on this link.

I don't know where they came up with the title "Epic" :).  On most everybody's top 10 list for 2015. It gets better the more you can absorb, as there is a lot going on. Anybody reminded of Sun Ra  Orkestra?

Art Pepper in his autobiography, Straight life, admitted to armed robbery although I am unsure if he ever went to prison for it. Problem was the
The new format continues to mess with me. I took "problem was the" out and it somehow still posted????

Don"t forget the Big Band

O-10, look up Widows Taste website, interesting reviews of "Straight Life". Also some recently released recordings of Pepper's.
Jafant, No I have not heard the new Bill Frissell, but I will!

Also, I forgot to thank you on the Matthew Shipp recommendation a while back. I have been a fan, since the incredible David S. Ware recordings in the 90's, but lost track. He puts out so much work.
You think Jazz is a was, when Jazz is an is!

That is why we seem to always be at this point, no matter how many times I think we have worked past it.

Frogman's Steps Ahead post reminded me of this Mike Nock's recording with Mike Brecker, Al Foster and George Mraz . Not the music I would post off the record, but…..

I was wondering what all of you thought about the slow groove, where Harland played around the groove intentionally.

I will look.at the music posted when I.get home tonight. These people actually think I should work! :-)
Jafant, you may remember this

I too like Mr.Thomas in his Avant Garde mode than conventional, and only in small doses, unless heavily medicated, but Pharoah Sanders is good in most all situations.
Thanks Frogman! I hate half truths and just did it myself. I guess I will file this under, if you don't have time to post correctly, don't post
O-10, I do have "Jewels of Thought", but Kharma is one recording that I had on cassette, and was forced to get rid of due to lack of storage space.

It still bothers me, that I had to get rid of thousands of great titles on cassette. Should have got rid of a child instead  :), in hindsight, but I do like to hunt down music in dark, dusty rooms, so maybe one day I will get them all back!

I am not the biggest fan of Leon, but thanks for bringing him up for discussion and listening.

Rok, I remember reading that" Bloodcount" was actually another song title written before Strayhorn was sick, before the history we were told , of it being composed by Strayhorn on his deathbed, but I like the history we were told.

Have to leave for work, so I don't have time to clean up that last paragraph.

O-10, It does make a huge difference if we knew or heard someone personally. I hope they are good memories. Leon was a unique singer, and I meant no harm; maybe I need to get adjusted to him, And give him another chance.

Rok, while checking out Jimmy Blanton records I ran across this and knew you were a fan. Can’t figure out why? ;0 )

Speaking of Conductors, What do our two esteemed classical musicians, Frogman and Learsfool, think of Jaap Van Sweden leaving the Dallas  Symphony for New York Philharmonic ?

I thought it would be a good thing for New York, because he is very good in my novice opinion, but noticed some apprehension in an article. I guess change is hard on both sides when someone leaves a post.

Rok, i agree on a surface level that you are correct, but if you listen to what a  Bassist and drummer are playing behind the frontline, and how they add much more than foundation and beat, and are just as important as lead players. And when all the players are listening to each other; Awesome!

The playing of Haden, on bass, and Dejohnette , on drums, is a revelation, on the Metheny/ Coleman recording of Song X. I know this is not a style for you, but I listened to the rhythm section, over and over in the 80's, so this is the only thing that I thought of as a perfect example.

At first it is like watching the offensive line open a hole in American football, but before long you start to see the beauty of the interior line play. ;)

A little Oscar Pettiford, with Kenny Clark and some weird guy who obviously can't play. I've got stuck on this for the past week!

O-10, I love both those bands, but if you forced me to choose the best group from that time period…..

Tell Armsrong, Parker, Ellington,Miles, ect, it was not about intellect.

Study the origins of Bebop, then come back. They were studying everyday what the classical composers of their time were doing.

Same with Ellington. He went from dance band to Orchestral.

Always been about great musicians intellect.

I also agree with O-10 ,that his mystery musician friend , after years of practice , could hit a time where he was firing on all cylinders and also due to playing regularly , was able to move forward without practice.

How long would that " zone"last ??????????

O gets a little cranky sometimes, but he would not make it up.

Purple panther piss; I had to look that up, after I stopped laughing.

Very sorry about spelling. 😱

I know , you know, all those men were genius.

I will have to get back with you.

They were here listening and learning in music theory. Diminished cords, Sevenths, triads, all the nuts and bolts.
Sorry to spoil the Mary Lou love fest, but I am still stuck on bassist, and this marvelous trio came to mind.

Learsfool , somewhere during our discussions, I determined that our mystery jazzman was a organist. I can't remember when or where, and I never was able to be 100 percent sure, but somewhere through the years I decided he was an organist. Does it change your opinion of the possibilities of O-10's magic summer?

O-10, am I hot or cold?

Alex, if O-10 said he has been lying about his adventures with the mystery jazzman for 3 years, I for one believe him. ;)

Alex, Nice cut! I cheated and looked up the trumpet player, but should have known.

Sorry I was comparing the trio's as a whole, and mainly Evans to Werner. My bad! Forgot the initial point was the bass player.

Marc Johnson played with Bill Evans from 1978 until his death.
O-10, other than they are playing a Bill Evan's tune, and Bill Evan's bass player is on bass, I don't think they sound much alike.

Mr. Evans has a soft touch and quite a different way of playing from Mr. Werner. Werner actually strikes his keys when they are bad. Evans always tries to spoil his keys with timeouts.

I do think they both would agree, less is more.
See if you can locate the various greats from this band. Nice solo by Kenny Garrett.

Rok, I am still trying to get through the Bernard Perdie CD. I have Soul to Jazz II. Will report back once complete.
Thanks for the lineup.

This year is the 50th year, of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra . Thad left in 1978 and the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra lasted until Mel Lewis's death in 1990. They changed their name to the Vangard Jazz Orchestra . Still going strong.
