fuses - the $39 ones or the 85 cent ones

My Rogue Cronus recently blew a slow blow fuse. I was surfing to find a replacement. The stock fuse is a typical metal end cap, glass and "wire" fuse. The audio emporiums only seemed to offer these $39 German gold plated end wunderkinds. I finally found "normal" fuses from a guitar amp site. Has anyone tried the uber fuses and found the sound better? Hard to understand how it could be. Thanks for any thoughts.

Dkzzzzzzzzzzzzz...WAKE UP MAN!! Stupidity may be forgiven, but ignorance is incurable. Now step away from your bose radio.
Just placed two 8amp large Hi Fi Tuning fuses into my Krell 400xi. I must say that across the board my system sounded more vivid, dynamic, smoother and with less distortion. Definition was enhanced as well...sexier sound overall! Soundstaging is more defined with better timbre and contrast...violins never sounded better:) FYI, I used Pro Gold on the fuse end caps to help enhance contact and current transfer.
Nsgarch, yes I did use Pro Gold on the previous fuses and every other contact as well. All of the individual changes are subtle, but collectively it hits you as more refined, better defined and full of more pixels...in other words more color and body to the instruments.
If $39 is considered anything more than couch cushion change then get the friggin ++++ off this site. Second, try them after you have addressed all the other parameters in your system. A well tuned system should reveal the difference a fuse makes (for good or bad). Some people can't tell the difference between a violin and a viola, so results will vary. Audiofeil is most peculiar in his discourse...slightly random, obtuse at times and seemingly grounded in his self importance. Perhaps passages of music should be exchanged before determinations are made regarding the worth of someones opinions...that would surely help to assign merit where it is deserved!
I'm ordering Papa Johns right now...maybe it will make my system more relaxed sounding?...Hmmm!
I loved 8 track....you could hear some of the other program material bleeding through during track changes and part of me always wondered exactly what WAS going to come on next! Those were the days my friends; Chunky, clunky and funky.
OK, I went back and forth replacing my old stock fuses in my 400xi vs the Hi Fi Tuning fuses plus I checked for directionality of the Hi Fi fuses and the results are....drum roll please............Hi Fi Tuning Fuses are directional (arrows should point toward the component) and sound far superior to the stock fuses. Having the fuses in backwards causes the highs to become shrill, forward and hard sounding, bass lacks focus and instruments seem a bit out of sync in relationship to each other. The stock fuses are less dynamic, less transparent, do not image as well and seem to add a bit more distortion. Bottom line is that the Hi Fi Tuning Fuses open things up more, seperate instruments better, increase dynamics, and reduce distortion...quite a bargain for chump change:)
For me it is something I wouldn't want to do without, especially when us audiophiles grasp for even marginal improvements where we can get them. Better highs, more vivid mids and deeper more focused bass response alon with enhanced transparency...yeah, I think that's dramatic!
No wine, several days of listening and short term comparisons plus using familiar material and passages repeatably. Experiences are mine and should be considered suspect until validated by an official oversite commitee committed to the advancement and general well being of the audiophile community at large...or, you could try the experiment yourself:)
This stuff is all in good fun and in this case cheap! On any given day whilst deeply involved in the music one may not even care which fuse is in use. Then again perceptions are everything sometimes.
Rodman99999 says it well! I wonder how many audiophiles are grounded in the sense of having experienced live music on a regular basis and or have had the opportunity to experience various venue acoustics. The room your in is the main component of your system. Charles Hansen is doing just such a demo, illustrating how a cheap stereo can sound better than a high end rig given a better acoustical environment. The fuses add more acoustic pixelation to the music...clarity, energy and tonality all improved.
I rolled my dad's car over to an 8 track tape of Golden Earing playing "Radar Love" on route 81 in northeastern Pa while driving the scond leg of an all night commute from Millersvile U. to my future wifes college in Bloomsberg Pa. I landed in a ditch after skidding on black ice and landing at the bottom of an embankment...they closed the ramp after my accident was reported. The car was a Chrysler Cordoba. When I talked to my dad I said, "You won't believe what I've done to your car", using my best Ricardo Montelban voice.
In fact, it did soften the impact quite a bit...if only that pesky rearview mirror wouldn't have punched me in the head.
I did just elevate my sub's...what a freakin major advancement in low end authority and definition!
Come to think of it, I do have alot of gas problems. Maybe it WAS gas and not the memory of a car crash at all that endeared me to the 8 btrack format. Oh well, we learn from each other because we care...right??
Yes, do it now Timrhu!! I used home made wood plinths with brass footers..1" thick and 15"x15" for my subs. My subs also have Mapleshade brass heavyfeet footers attached for even more decoupling and isolation. The results are so impressive that I could swear I had a pair of new $27K wilson 8's or the like ...I did have a pair of the 6's once and the sub elevation has surpassed the bass quality and dynamics of those $20k speakers. The improvement was quite startling across the board; Better slam, improved weight and definition with increased clarity and soundstaging has improved as well. Image specificity and instrument placement are stunning...it seems that proper integration and decoupling of the subs effects more than just low bass response. The ear seems to pick up a better sense of coherence well up into the mid band...remarkable!!
Says something about MBL and how highly they trust their customers. Not surprising though..they don't want some nimrod screwin around with their amp and then sending it back for repair!
Albertporter, my two 8amp fuses are in my Krell 400xi and it has been about 40hrs of listening and 3 weeks since installation (always on standby of course).
Magnets...Hmmm! Now that's a gem. No wonder manufacturers discourage this sort of stuff.
I am going to replace my line fuse in the Krell SACD standard and my two subwoofer fuses as well...will report after burn in!!
Anyone try the HiFi tuning fuses in their subwoofers?..and if so what were the results?
