CDR playback in DVD player

I have an older Sony DVD player that will not play cdr is there any way to change this as i like to listen to my burned cds

DVD players use a slightly different frequency of laser from a regular CD and they cannot read standard CD-Rs some players do both, but they usually have two lasers.
