The Hub: Does a pair of 5's beat an 8?
Hello, I think you've answered your own question. That is, you must try it out for yourself in your system. I know that sounds a bit cliche', but that does not make it any less true. Having said that, theoretically, there are many reasons why the ...
Best Tube Preamp with Phono under $2000 ?
New or used?
Bypassing capacitor caps , and caps in General
I don't like messing with a chef's stew- unless I ask and they say otherwise. You might ruin the pot and void the warranty or worse. Great circuit design with cheap caps will overcome a lesser circuit with expensive caps. Too much cap propaganda. ...
Should I Brush My Cartridge After Each Use?
Playing vinyl is not fun, it is a chore. Listening to vinyl is ......When I was a kid I used to use my finger to clean the needle. Good thing it was my father's stereo(!) Sorry Dad.Anyway, I notice that when I clean the stylus after every play the...
SET amps and speaker sensitivity.
You also have to consider the actual impedence of the speaker. Assuming a benign impedence, then 60 tube push pull watts for a 95db sensitive speaker. 30 watts for a 98db push pull amp and 15 watt SET amp for a 101db speaker. If I had a pair of La...
Recommend Speakers For Yamamoto
Having heard the Yama a few times, uh, well it would make an awesome tweeter or perhaps, upper midrange/tweeter amp(!).Otherwise, driving a more or less full range speaker, it will sound like an AM radio.
Totem Forest uses a Swan driver???????
Standard industry formula of 1:5, the Forrest would need to be manufactured for 600.00. The markup covers all the things we Audiogoners like to avoid: dealer markup, middleman/distributer, manufacturer profit, marketing, R&D, overhead, consume...
Spiral Horn
Thanks for posting your experiments. I've been visiting Mr. Takenaka's site for a couple of years and corresponded with him. Nice and helpful guy.I too agree that if somebody casted the spiral tube and could sell inexpensively I would buy a pair o...
Wood cones - any experiences?
Interesting indeed. As a collector of speaker drivers, I've come to the conclusion that natural fiber cones sound best in drivers 3"-4" and above. JVC claims to soak the cone in sake (rice wine) to prevent it from splitting. I spoke to another dri...
Edgarhorn Titans/Seismic Sub opinions.
The strenghts of the Titans are effortless dynamics and efficiency. And unlike other types of horn systems (Klipsch) they have little horn colorations, have some finesse', and look pretty good.I've heard them at the CES numerous times. Mr. Edgar h...
Building your own enclosures
I would check out audioasylum.com "high efficiency speaker" forum and diyaudio.com "loudspeaker" section. Browse, post a question, etc. Also, Madisound.com for speaker kits and Fostex single driver speakers (like Omega speakers). They have plans fo...
Hiff Eff. Full Range Fostex Driver question
6.5" full range driver in small bass reflex box + LOUD rock/metal music = wishful thinking. Sub will not help full range driver from crapping out at loud level. No impact. Try Pink Floyd, the Wall- loud helicopter, full range driver will bottom ou...
phono preamp with volume control
Art Audio has a volume control option on their Vinyl One. You could always wire in an attenuator on most any phonostage. Or use something minimalist like the EVS attenuators.
Best Small Speakers
Can you build speaker cabinets (or have them built)? If so I'd recommend small enlcosures using the Jordan JX92s drivers. Check audioasylum.com, fullrangedriver.com and ejjordan.co.uk for more information.
best monitors above 300Hz
An 8" Lowther in a sealed enclosure would be ideal.I think the bigger problem is finding a "fast subwoofer." Subwoofer by definition operates below a woofer, and would operate at 40Hz or below. Most/all commercial subwoofers claim to operate from ...
