New to the 2 channel where to start??
I agree with the above post recommending that you start with the speakers first, but only as it relates to room size. The speakers will dictate the amp you will need to optimize them. This will give you an idea about what it is going to cost for t...
Best small speaker
Buy the JM Lab because you have heard them and like them. Also, because you are using tubes. The 805s are slow and processed sounding. The Totem and Proac recommendations are excellent, but listen to them first before making a decision as they hav...
Mark Knopfler's Ragpickers Dream-heard it?
I bought the cd last December and still listen to it. I really like it and almost ordered the lp version (they were on order). I think that this album represents a more mature Mark Knopfler, yet it has some of the same hooks that are in his earlie...
which integrated?...
I think that the VTL TT25s are a good recommendation (I have a pair also). Use a passive preamp like a Placette (bonus remote ability) and you should have some extra money left over. Use it to buy short Coincident speaker cables and interconnects.
Choking more SPL's out of Maggie 3.6's
Probably not and not recommended as you will probably damage your speakers. You need Klispchorns or some type of horn speakers. As an aside, have your ears checked as you may be suffering from some hearing loss as the 3.6s can play pretty loud.
why go against REL setup recommendation?
I have a REL sub and it did not work in the corner of my room- boomy wobbly bass. Ultimately, the sub worked best when it was placed on the same plane as the speakers. I agree with the above post on not having enough sub for the room and using cor...
Are Lowthers a "full range listening" speaker?
Best to listen for yourself. Since you have "broad" musical tastes, which include rock, a Lowther based speaker is not the best choice. One of the best Lowther speakers I've heard were the Rythyms, which use a modified DX-4. I thought the speakers ...
Beth Orton's "Trailor Park" ain't too bad
I find her music compositions and arrangements are better than "ain't too bad." (The last cut on "Daybreaker: is something else.) However, her thin and dry voice is what grates on me over a period of time. Kind of like the sound of sanding with 60...
Totem's "Hawk" and "Forrest":How Hi-End Are They?
I would consider the Hawks "high end" if by that you mean they do not sound like "mid fi." Seriously, the Hawks are really very good at soundstaging. Their bass response is okay, but don't expect it to go low as it is only a single 5.5 inch driver...
Triode vs. Ultra-Linear vs. SET
The Rogue 88 sounds better in triode than it does in ultralinear. Since the Rogue can be set very easily in either mode you should try both and see (hear) for yourself which you prefer.I compared the Rogue 88 in triode against a 300b SET and found...
To "Step up", or not?
The very best analog systems I have heard used a low output MC with step-up into a tube phono stage. However, both components togther were over 5K not including the cartridge. Using a solid state (usually op-amps) high gain phono stage (Tom Evan's...
To "Step up", or not?
I was in a similar position and opted for the higher output moving coil. Even though, I had read a lot about step-ups (Stevens & Billington diy or Audio Note) most of the good ones were more than I had budgeted for the cartridge, which was abo...
OTL Tube Amps-- are they superior to everything?
Short answer is no. I agree that all designs are a compromise. You have to decide what compromises are right for you. I have a 20 watt OTL and speakers with low impedences do not work well with it at all. This does not mean that it will sound good...
Grado Platinum VS Dynavector 10x4 MkII
You may want to wait for the 10x5, which should be coming out shortly. I did not have the Platinum, but had the Sonata and two Dynavectors 10x4II and 20x. The Dynas sound more lively and exciting while the Grado is more laid back with a lush sound...
LP 12 Owners-If you were going to buy a new TT ...
I have a Linn and am thinking about an upgrade. My choices thus far are: Teres, Nottingham Spacedeck or VPI Aries. All seem easier to set up and maintain. You might want to post your query at Vinyl asylum.
