Shhhhhh Don't tell my wife. Looking at B&W 802Ns
To answer your question regarding the room, it is certainly large enough and you will have more than enough power. That said, N802's tend towards brightness with SS gear so be careful of component matching. A friend has his mated to an all Linn sy...
How good is 8000 dollar Sony Dac transport from 89
We've talked before, if the price is right, go for it. I'll bet it still sounds great.
What is a "transmission line" speaker?
I use Green Mountain Audio Diamantes that are a quarter wave transmission line. The speakers are cast marble and two pieces each. The upper part contains the speakers and crossover while the bottom/base contains the folded network for the transmis...
Tube Preamp with PS Audio P300
It would be very unlikely that the BAT would draw more current than the 300 is capable of delivering. My Audio Research preamp uses only about 35 watts. My powerplant does not have multi-wave and I use the 60 cycle setting only and have had no noi...
Starting Over
Cary SLI50 integrated amp 30wpc pure class A tube, there's one for sale now. For speakers, if you want to set up a near field in this small room use LS35A model speakers, awesome imaging and soundstage, otherwise Proac 1SC's with a Sony ES cdp and...
CES Rookie
I purchased a set of speakers from Triad Design at the CES in the late eighties which I still own and love. The price, a show special was a good deal and I never would have found these speakers otherwise.
Why would 1 SS monoblock run hotter than other?
I would guess bias current is off in the cooler running amp and the amps won't sound the same under these conditions. You should contact Krell and see if they will tell you how to make this adjustment or someone to service it locally. There are no...
B&W 802N's ???amplification???
I started off with a Classe CA300 which created a huge soundstage with solid bottom end wallop, a bit lean in the mid-bass and depeneding on source material some unpleasant bite in the lower treble. It sounded best on Enya type music or Patricia B...
Looking for a great tube headphone amp
I'll cast my vote for the ASL MG Head amp driving the Sennheiser HD600. I don't find it excessively tubey, very good bass, excellent dynamics and revealing without being brittle, an excellent combination!
Anyone else like to Listen in the Dark?
I might speculate that the listeners of the dark have systems that image incredibly well. I normally leave the lights on dim but if I have my Green Mountain Diamantes set up, I really get lost in the music when the room is dark. When you can't eas...
Best P-Mount cartridge -- No Grado please
I use the Ortofon TM20 P-mount on a Technics SL10 linear tracking table fed into a Musical Surroundings Phonomena phono stage. Most of my records are 70's rock and roll and some jazz and the sound is dynamic and has an even frequency balance, neit...
Suggestions on integrated tube amps?
Try to find a Cary SLI 50, pure class A bias using E34L's with 30 watts per channel. This amp is magic, it kicks butt and is gorgeus besides, not as cute as the Stingray but will sonically wipe it out with more slam, air, and bass extension.
Anyone had problems with a recone job?
It probably wasn't reconed but just a new surround for the cones. I had this surround disintegration happen to my JBL L112's and had new surrounds put on and I never did like the bass again after that. Perhaps, it was a matter of "break in" but th...
Cars. What does the typical audiophile drive?
Good choices kthomas. I also drive a 96 M-3 3.2 coupe and my special occasion car is a 70 BMW 1600ti that has been highly modified. I also have a work truck that's a 2000 Toyota Tundra 4x4.
SPL, Dynamics and bottom end
My average listening level, ie not reading but listening is usually in the 85-88 db range with peaks of somewhere about 10 db greater than that. At this level instruments sound realistic and the room is filled with sound. I have good bass extensio...
