Stereophile Article - Holt telling it like it is.
My solution to the spiraling cost of high-end gear and the hijacking of our hobby by the lunatics and nouveau riche is to rediscover the joys of playing the sax. There is simply no comparison between the timbre and freshness of my alto with its re...
Re-tubing my ARC reference 1 preamp
I recently retubed my ARC Ref.1 with the 6H23's from Upscale and have been very happy. These tubes are quiet with great bass and midrange. I previously used NOS Amperex tubes purchased from ebay with mixed success. Many of them were noisy and prod...
what's under your Parsifals?
Hi guys, I found a great way to make sure that the Parsifals are both at the same tilt angle. I suppose this will work with any speaker that has a flat top. Use a laser level (available at any hardware store) and place it at the top of the speaker...
what's under your Parsifals?
I've got each of my Parisfals on a 3/4 inch slab of high-density fiberboard (carpet underneath over a suspended floor). The angle is such that the front of each woofer box is still angled slightly back, but not as much as before. I haven't actuall...
what's under your Parsifals?
JB, I tried recently tilting the Verities forward using the spikes and experienced an increase in richness and bass warmth. Definitely worth trying for all Verity owners. I imagine the effect depends a great deal on your listening height. Randy
NOLA Speakers
I owned Circes for about 4 years and loved everything about them except their looks. They took a long time to place correctly (closer together than other speakers) but they sounded great in my room with a wide range of music. Maybe they are more f...
what's under your Parsifals?
Two platforms made of high-density fiberboard, then the spikes that came with the Ovations. I'm still dialing them in after one year. Lately, I've been trying the second of two configurations recommended by Julian, with the speakers farther apart....
Sonus Faber Extremas ?
I heard them once at a dealer and it was one of those unforgetable audio experiences. Playing Sonny Rollins Way Out West, they sounded spooky. A bit dark overall and less detailed compared to some more popular high-end speakers but man did they si...
Anybody play any musical instruments...........
I started playing alto sax as an adult, at the age of 30. Gave it up for 5 years while my kids were young. I took it up just a few months ago, after visiting China and seeing the old folks practicing Tai Chi and playing traditional instruments in ...
Nordost Super Flatwire or Auditorium 23?
Why not try both combinations? Speaker cable is very system dependent, as I found recently when comparing the Auditorium 23s to my resident cables.
Has anyone tried double CLS
I loved my eight years with the CLSIIZ's. I had 'em on Arcici stands and in the last three years, augmented them with a REL Stadium II sub. But I am very dubious that any amount of reenforcement in the bass can aleviate what I considered a major s...
Parsifal Encore Bass/Low midrange
Another possibility is that the speakers were not broken in. It takes about 600 hours to break in the bass. Until then, it is not well integrated with the mids and can sound a bit dry. Randy
Parsifal Encore Bass/Low midrange
Rick, I'm really surprised by what you heard. In my moderate sized room with some sound treatment (5 ASC tube traps, RPG diffusor behind the speakers, and Argent room lenses), the bass is not boomy at all. It extends a bit below 30 Hz and is quite...
shipping speakers
I ran into a real quandry when I tried to sell my Alon Circe's. They were too big for Fedex and for UPS and the only other shipper in the area, BAX, required that they be shipped from a business. Since I work part time as a host for an NPR radio s...
REL Stadium 3 vs. 2
Amplifier wattage is not exponential. Loudness is a logarithmic function of power. So a 200 watt amp will be able to play about 10 Log (2) = 3 dB louder than a 100 watt amp. An increase of 6 dB would sound twice as loud.Randy
