The wall behind me.
I would think that if your listening chair is really close to the rear wall then you would want to deaden it, absorb as much as possible to help reduce the increased bass response. However, in general, a combination of defraction and absorption is...
Jolida 202a Tube Rolling Question 12ax7 12at7
I'm sorry to hear the Tung-Sol tubes didn't work out for you. The Mullards will likely be juuuuuust right. They certainly have a very lush and harmonic tone to them and are far from the last word in top end extension. If you start rolling some of ...
Break in period
No need to worry about the neighbors. The gear doesn't have to be played very loud to achieve the burn-in needed...usually around 200 hours. I wouldn't leave tube gear unattended, but I do leave it on during the night, while I sleep when I'm break...
Passive Pre - No Regrets?
I've been very reluctant to consider any component change as being "better" until I have played many hours of music that I am very familiar with through the new addition and then back into the older gear. Sometimes it takes months to realize that ...
Jolida 202a Tube Rolling Question 12ax7 12at7
I would bet the main difference is as mentioned...screening. However, there is an advantage to screening tubes for low noise and matching sections and the gold pins would likely be along the lines of having gold plated inputs on a preamp. The key ...
I'd love some help/opinions
If I were to consider going with Rotel for amplification, I would opt for the older 970, 971, 980 or 991 amplifiers. The newer Rotels have lost that little bit of transient speed that separated them from the other British stuff. I don't know what ...
Need help with bookshelf speaker choices. . .
No need to apologize for the Dared amps. They may not be pricey, but they deliver the sonic goods. I have lots of stuff, including the Dared VP-20 mono amps and though I'm not terribly confident they will be running a few years from now, they soun...
Can tube amps give true high end bass?
If your tube amps compliment the impedence characteristics of your speakers, there is no reason that tube amps can't produce the control needed on the woofers. The problems start when the tube amps aren't properly mated to the right speakers and g...
Jolida 202a Tube Rolling Question 12ax7 12at7
Mullard used the Philips code system on their tubes. The first 3 digits of the code, usually found on the lower part of the glass and very hard to see, are of little consequence. The 4th digit, often beginning right under the first 3, will designa...
Jolida 202a Tube Rolling Question 12ax7 12at7
Nah, if it's a Blackburn production, it will have the Mullard characteristics. There are many Mullards with different labels. The main thing is to look for the characteristic code of B in the date codes.
Jolida 202a Tube Rolling Question 12ax7 12at7
I agree with the comment to get rid if the EH tubes. I have two Jolida amps and have done a lot of rolling. My favorite combination is the new Tung-Sol reissue ECC803S to replace the 12AX7, the GE 12AT7 where applicable (yes, the lowly GE) and Ei ...
Hi-Fi Lingo and What we should be listening for
Here ya go. Everything you ever wanted to know about describing what you are hearing...or not hearing.http://stereophile.com/reference/50/
Rogue Cronus too bright
Hi Arch, I've only spent a few hours with a Cronus and didn't notice any prominance in the 4K region. I was listening through ProAc speakers and a Simaudio player.I was quite impressed with the Cronus and so I wouldn't give up on the amp without t...
What receptacle for 240V 20A in the States?
Your dryer probably runs off of 240. I guess you could get one of those big ol dryer cords and receptacles at Home Depot.
Warmest speaker?
I've always thought Rega speakers were rather warm.
