Equalizer in a Hi Fi system
@milpai  Thanks, that's a great tip. Didn't know that. But it does make sense.  Many times the official Help within a program is lacking, and I just ask the same technical question in Google and get the answer I need. Very often there's a Youtube...
Equalizer in a Hi Fi system
So is Audiogon's search good for ANYTHING?? I really like this thread, purely about equalizers, but if I search discussions for "equalizer" it doesn't find it.... at all!  Even if I type all the words of the exact title "Equalizer in a HiFi syste...
Ortofon Cadenza vs. old Ortofon MC30 Super2 ?
Looking at the Modwright description, your MC input is an internal SUT.  So your noise spec should be great either way.  Just comparing the sound of 2 different SUTs.
Ortofon Cadenza vs. old Ortofon MC30 Super2 ?
@theflattire Yes.... certainly if you're happy.. then leave it alone.   The MC stage in the Parasound is active.  I had the JC3 for ~8 years, and happy with the sound, but the noise bugged me.  I liked my SUT sound too, but there was that resolut...
Ortofon Cadenza vs. old Ortofon MC30 Super2 ?
@theflattire I just looked at the HM-7's and HM-5's.  Do you also use that switch box that they're currently being sold with?  Have you ever vigorously compared using the SUT vs. just the MC gain stage?  (if u have one)   I'm wondering if you get...
Ortofon Cadenza vs. old Ortofon MC30 Super2 ?
@theflattire Cool that you are still running that old cart! There were some interim steps not mentioned. I first tried to replace it with a Soundsmith Zephyr mkII or mk3. ($1200) Very very nice cart.... but so nice that it was boring. I used it fo...
Help me pick a Dac
I recently purchased both a Denafrips Ares II and a Schiit Bifrost 2. I did NOT like the Ares at all, and I do love the Bifrost. I also have a 10yr old Lynx Hilo, which sounds very nice, but very different from the Bifrost. Bifrost is more punch...
Equalizer in a Hi Fi system
@ellajeanelle For looks AND performance, it would be hard to beat the new McIntosh MQ112.
Equalizer in a Hi Fi system
@jtcf I'm assuming you are new to API eq.  API EQ's have long been a standard in studios.  The most famous model 550 has stepped controls.  This is both sonically superior, AND more easily & accurately recalled at a later time.  This new API e...
Equalizer in a Hi Fi system
@tlcocks  As for stringing chains of processors together, if you read or watch anything about mixers TODAY, you can bet they are chaining digital plugins, and the noise & distortion simply does not add up like with analog gear.  Also... those...
Equalizer in a Hi Fi system
@tlcocks Thanks for checking on that PEQ-1.... Yeah I had a noise problem pop up on mine.  There's an op-amp chip responsible for each EQ band and I swapped them around until I found the offending ones.  I moved the noisy one from the 2k band to t...
Equalizer in a Hi Fi system
@tlcocks I'm so sad that I'd gotten a bum Charter Oak unit. Looking back thru emails, I bought it in 2011 when it first came out, and within a month I had to return it with several problems.  I got it back, and it was better, but it still had issu...
Equalizer in a Hi Fi system
I may need to sell a few items out of my rack first, not only for the money, but to make space for a Michelangelo. The review above is as enticing to an engineer like me, as it is horrifying to the audiophile purists out there, who are thinking, ...
Equalizer in a Hi Fi system
@ellajeanelle Your complaint about noisy EQ is justifiable by your comment that you’ve tried many 31-band and graphic EQs. Graphic EQs are the worst! They were designed for live sound where you need to get quick control of a room, but all those b...
DAC suggestions for a reasonably modest system
I borrowed a lowly little Schiit Moduis from a friend and was shocked by how good it was for just $229.  So of course I one-upped him and bought the Bifrost.  I'm super happy with it.   Then I thought I'd go even better for my other system, and g...
