What melted my tweeter?
Jeff,Two possibilities, but they are simply guesses. It is possible that the amplifier (or even the pre-amp upstream) has been damaged by the power fluctuation. If the component has a high frequency oscillation or instability, then exposure to the...
Amplifiers:A Keeper for Life. Do you know of one ?
My Wavac 833v1.3 amps will be staying a very long time.
What's is DAC and Transport? and how do they...
A CD transport + Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) = CD player. Having two separate units, instead of a single box, can provide better performance, though it also increases the opportunity to mess up the sound if each cable, platform, power cord, ...
looking for best isolation platform for CD player
Proy- Since you've already considered Sistrum for your amp, why not consider them for your other electronics? They are very effective. However, isolation isn't their design goal, but rather high efficiency coupling to ground. The best isolation pl...
Physical explanation of amp's break in?
Sean - Excellent response! From those of us who are ee and still use our test equipment, brains, and ears, thank you. Keep preach'n, even if only to the choir. As always, just one man's opinion.
Lazarus Cascade Basic Preamp - Tube question
Sorry, but it has been too long since I had one open to be sure of the configuration. Usually, the tubes for the phono stage are the tubes closest to the input "phono" jacks on the rear panel, if this is of any help. Good luck.
Will the 4 ohm double if I bridge my Mcintosh???
Jalen- The ability of an amplifier (solidstate) to double power output when the load is halved, usually indicates a very healthy power supply. The Mc7100 can't do this in stereo mode, and certainly can't do this in bridged mode. This doesn't mean ...
I adore my Shahinian loudspeakers
Ron - Shaninian speakers have been around since the late 70's as I recall. They have always had a low key approach to promotion. I heard them at CES in the late 80's, in conjunction with Bedini, I think. They are well worth the effort to audition ...
Are the better $$$ 845 tubes worth it sonically??
Hi Sutts- I haven't tried the KR845's, but the US NOS 845s were a huge improvement over the stock Sino tube. Yes, they are expensive. However, considering their longevity and the level of sonic improvement, I believe they are a worthwhile investme...
Please explain preamp theater pass thru
Dwud- Whether the pre-amp is in or "out of the signal path" as you've mentioned, isn't really a make or break issue. If the analog pre-amp is a good unit, it won't be hurting(?) the processed signal from your surround unit. As others have suggeste...
Power Amp Tweaking
I've experienced the opposite effect to those above, in that I've found that I prefer coupling instead of isolation. This has been my preference with both solidstate and tube equipment. The bottomline is that both approaches will effect the sound....
Best sounding 6SN7 VT231 for amplifier input
My preference was the 6SN7W metal base, followed by the Ken-Rad and Tung-Sol black glass. The Mullard CV had a little higher noise floor, but very seductive and enveloping. When I wanted to simply float away on the music, the Mullard was a great c...
Yoiks, I'm amplifier confused.
I'd also include a used Cary V12 in that price range as well. Just a suggestion.
what's my problem?
Get rid of the MI 400!! You don't have to spend lots of money on cables to significantly improve upon what you're running now. This also includes upgraded power cords. As mentioned, speaker placement tweaking can greatly improve the sound. Also co...
Pre-amp Problem - Need Advice
First, are you sure that the pre-amp is the problem, or is it the amp? Once you've determined the damaged component, you'll likely have to send it in for repair. Remember, it is always safest to reconfigure equipment that is powered OFF, not simpl...
