What does "Warm" mean?
When we had tone controls, 'warm' and 'bright' were easily defined by what you did with the bass and treble knobs. No one agrees on which is the best loudspeaker.  But most everyone agrees the second best is the LS3/5a. That made me laugh. Pos...
1st Impression, Join the Forum?
There are indeed many knowledgeable people here who are generally kind to those in need. We do see posts by dealers who do not always declare themselves as such, and we do have an international membership. It does mean that when English is not one...
MM vs. MC: What Happens When People Jump Into MC Too Early?
@pindac I can send you the whole Gramophone article if you like. It is entirely possible that the particular IV you own was luckily made with parts that would have passed the V quality control. Or perhaps the spring-applied VTF wasn't as nice to y...
MM vs. MC: What Happens When People Jump Into MC Too Early?
@rauliruegas You can still buy the damping trough kit for the IV, or at least you could two years ago when I enquired of my contact at SME. But they were £369 each.
MM vs. MC: What Happens When People Jump Into MC Too Early?
My understanding is that the IV (which came out after the V) is made with laxer tolerances. In other words, the parts that go into a V are carefully selected to ensure they are within strict tolerance limits. For a IV, the parts are simply taken o...

The very good full Grado line are all moving magnet. Funny.. Ahem. You know what I'm going to say, don't you?

I installed a new Nagaoka MP-700
I imagine Expert Stylus would be fine with it, but I doubt if they would want to delve any deeper than the stylus.
I installed a new Nagaoka MP-700
Sending my Decca Reference to the UK (ie londondecca.com's service department which is in Guildford now) was painless. Yes, costs are higher than they were. Expert Stylus are the makers of the Paratrace stylus, and if the cartridge needs nothing e...
Do I still need to buy a stylus force gauge if I can get the settings off the internet?
I asked an AI to summarise Elliott's long post. It said: "Yes."
Earth Day, turn those amps OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I turn my amps off to save my NOS tubes rather than the planet!
Oh, wow. Thank you to many...
Proper record cleaning is the biggest upgrade, as I've often said. The cleaner, the better, but conversely, anything is better than nothing. Some of my records survived being played with a ceramic cartridge on a Philips one box record player in th...
