Digitally recorded vinyl vs streaming
You mention 60s and 70s albums and say they were probably recorded digitally. They won't have been because there was no digital recording then. But many have since been re-mastered digitally. If you want to be sure of pure analogue sound, buy r...
Stereophile review of Millercarbon system featuring Tektron speakers
Right.  This isn't a review, it's a descriptive run-down with a few comments. Tekton has been going long enough and Stereophile has never reviewed any.  So I conclude there must be some issue about them for John Atkinson and Jim Austin. So it wi...
Vacuum tube amplified headphones...
@asvjerry  Point well made.  One thing stopping me is I sold the B&W 801s I had then and now have Martin Logan CLX Anniversaries that also sound detailed clean and clear and perhaps just a little headphone like (remembering the Stax are elect...
Tune of the Day
'Rainy Day Man'  James Taylor.  Can't get it out of my head this week, checked out some 1970 YouTubes and humming it everywhere.
Vacuum tube amplified headphones...
I have a wonderful Stax pair including tube amp.  Bought in mid-90s for flat living, very costly I recall.  I haven't listened for at least 10 years, but I should - the sound was about the clearest and cleanest I've ever heard and they beat most s...
Why do speakers improve with more powerful amps?
@jumia   Why buy low efficiency speakers?   Because like everything else in life, it's a tradeoff.  It is easier to build drivers with high sound quality if they are inefficient.  It's against engineering principles as well as natural logic to h...
When are speakers considered Hi-Fi and not Mid-Fi???
It's mid-fi if you want to upgrade it.
Used TechDAS Air Force III vs New Feickert Firebird with Kuzma Safir 9 vs SME 20 MK 2
@thr1961     I am not clear how the choice of a purely mechanical component out of direct contact with the signal, like an arm (or a turntable) can have a differential effect on sound when playing different musical genres. Do please explain.
Do my ears deceive me??
Often.
So many YouTube clips to evaluate sound quality. Why???
God knows. If they like the YourTube sound they should listen only on that, sell their system, bank the bread and buy a nicer car. No brainer for a no brain.
What's up with the price of Vintage equipment?
I think that's overpriced for the Jap gear. But some high-end stuff like Audio Research and Krell still holds up for SQ, although not on an exact par. Perhaps lovers of vintage gear feel nostalgic for the higher levels of distortion and somewhat...
Left Channel Blues
Gotta be the amp.  Vanishingly unlikely you have an intermittent cable connection.
Speaker impedance and sensitivity
Yes this is a repeat of an earlier thread. So have a precised repeat of my earler response: Low speaker sensitivity = more amplifier watts. Low speaker impedance = more amplifier guts.
Certain frequencies hurt
Unless you are listening at head-banging volumes, if your ears hurt something's wrong.  Go and see an ENT specialist right away.. In another thread there is a post about a (very costly) sub-woofer that can deliver 1Hz at 130dB.  Now that would hu...
Level adjusting speaker drivers
Way back when, in the 50s and 60s, amplifiers used to have tone controls by which the treble and base response could be increased or reduced.  Then in the 80s we got graphic equalisers, that enabled adjustment of the response of different slices o...
