I'll never listen to another record...
Agreed. But as a rule, I clean every used record I buy regardless of how pristine it may look. I think I cleaned most all of my collection ten years ago or more. I read somewhere that the sound doesn't get sucked from the vinyl surface during clea...
VPI Classic
Isn't there a slight problem with VPI arms that don't seat firmly onto the point of the unipivot bearing? (I've seen that before.) It's easy to lift the arm off of pivot and try to make sure it settles back onto the pivot correctly and firmly.

Differ? That voting with ones wallet determines quality? That iPhones and iPods are better than a good vinyl rig? Can you share whatever you're smoking with the rest of us?
What is the Phono stage you have finished with?
What you're describing are not connectivity issues. Those are cable quality issues and personal preferences. Nothing more. New models of components are introduced every year. Does that mean people's "old" systems are no longer any good and must be...

@ Unsound: Sure there are a lot of problems with vinyl. Nothing's perfect. Nothing is really very close. But to my ears (old as they are), vinyl LPs better the other reasonably available options for my system. Nothing that I could have in my syste...
What is the Phono stage you have finished with?
I beg to differ in your comment "as soon as you break the phono stage out to a seperate box, you have an connectivity problem with whatever is downstream. You see, one of the functions of a line stage is to control the interconnect cable. I don't ...

Michael Fremer was never young. His real name is Abel. He faked his death and framed his brother Cain for his murder. When looking closely at the CD format, problems seem to occur when there are massed high frequencies. It doesn't seem like CD sam...

I have an early Herron VTPH-1MC, serial number < 10. It has all the mods through around mid-2001. I'm completely satisfied with it. Very detailed without being analytical or too polite, pinpoint imaging with a huge and deep soundstage, transpar...
VPI bearing oil/grease?
Very interesting. So less is more. Thanks for the tip! How about rotating the bearing periodically? What I mean is to remove the three screws attaching the bearing to the plinth and rotating the bearing one-third turn and reattaching it to the pli...
"New" arm?
Shortcomings? Detectable glare in the midrange and upper midrange, bit of grain in the middle hf, loss of lower midrange detail, some obvious looseness in the bass, a mild loss of treble and deep bass energy. None of these are traits of the Herron...
VPI bearing oil/grease?
I agree if it's thick oil or grease. But would light oil be a different story?
VPI bearing oil/grease?
Being an inverted bearing, how would it work if a pool of light oil were deposited in the bearing such that when the shaft was inserted the oil would work its way up the and out of the top of the bearing. A small felt concentric ring around the be...
"New" arm?
Interesting. I've got a little experience with JMW and RPM unipivots. The RPM was quite nice. The JMW 10 was pretty good. Both worked well with Lyra Parnassus and Clavis DC. Have not heard much about the Morch arms but then I've been away for abou...
Stand out phono stages
I've been very pleased with my Herron VTPH-1MC. Surprised nobody mentioned it. I haven't heard the latest Herron phono stage, but I doubt he would introduce a new top-of-the-line unit without it bettering the older one.I should note that my system...
