the Garrard 301 plater is concaved.
I believe it was made this way intentionallyI don't know if it was intentional, but I would think it's easier to make it flat, certainly if turned on a lathe. A slightly concave platter, used with a clamp, helps flatten the LP.
Fidelity Research Headshell On SME Arm?
Which SME? If you have the FR headshell just try it.I use a heavy head shell on a 3009/II for the same reason: add mass. It requires more weight at the back too, to balance. The added weight at both ends loads the knife-edge bearings down more fir...
Tracking Force?
The coils must be centered within the magnetic field produced by the fixed magnets.... The manufacturer knows how much force is needed to put the coil where they want it. You set to that force. Period.I have cartridges with a single number for VTF...
An old Thorens TD125 MkII with SME 3009 or a Linn Sondek with Ittok ?
The Ittok was designed for LOMCs. It's far from ideal for your Shures.
low mass tone arm suggestion sub $1k used
I’m surprised the Mayware arm hasn’t been mentioned. Isn’t it the lowest-mass low-mass arm of all? I have one but never used it, so can’t comment further. Also, as the Technics hi-end arms have been mentioned — I did use the EPA-500 for awhile, wit...
linn sondek tt
Great discussion. The LP12 is great and you’re a fool. The LP12 stinks and you’re a fool.Despite disagreement on many things, there is clear common ground on one thing.
Theory about Fidelity Research MC & PMC Carts
I have two MC-201s. One is used — no idea of hours but stylus looks quite good at 150X to my highly inexpert eye. The other is NOS; I played it once, to confirm it works. It does and sounded lovely, but it was not really critical listening, and it...
Best vintage DD turntables from the 70's and 80's?
You ask or looking for a vintage TT where you can mount 3 arms and that DD vintage is the MS DDX-1000.I have Micro's successor model, DQX-1000. Many improvements, e.g. higher torque motor, and heavier platter, though thinner, and low center of gra...
Anyone else a big fan of Norman Grantz' Pablo Label form the 70's/80's
I have many Pablos, but one I particularly love is Joe Pass and Oscar Peterson playing duets from Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" — and Peterson is playing a clavichord! Its smaller sound is a great match with acoustic guitar. Their "Summertime" is ha...
Klemperer Mahler 7 mystery?
Klemperer often used very brisk tempi in his early recordings. My mom was a teenager when he conducted the LA Phil in the late 1930s, attended every concert she could, and remarked on the "high energy". That he evolved into such a deeply introspec...
ADC 26 BEST PRITCHARD CARTRIDGE EVER? or BEST CARTRIDGE EVER?
I look forward to the sequel to your first epic thread.
ADC 26 BEST PRITCHARD CARTRIDGE EVER? or BEST CARTRIDGE EVER?
I answered Lewm’s post — "Surely, that is the most important issue of our day, not the collapse of democracy and liberalism in Europe and the US" — immediately with: "It is because of that collapse that we’re focusing on trivia" — and it posted. N...
Any Members Tried the Audio Interface CST-80 SUT?
I saw one not long ago on a Japanese site for $999. But it may be gone — which would suggest it's a viable price. On the other hand I paid $60 for mine. Somewhere in between seems right. Does that help?OTOH, I've seen Cotters selling fast in the $...
Twist the cartridge phono cable
I'm always amazed by some people's eagerness to heap scorn on new ideas. It doesn't always lead to the fates of Giordano Bruno or Galileo, nor am I suggesting the unnamed wire-twister is their equal, but it's the same impulse and not unique to our...
ADC 26 BEST PRITCHARD CARTRIDGE EVER? or BEST CARTRIDGE EVER?
Raul has almost superhuman powers to make prices skyrocket. I wish he'd do that for my old car.
