Power Conditioning/UPS for Digital Audio Server
I assume you're just using the UPS on your computer equipment, not the audio stuff.Cheap UPSs do a couple things: - Just pass on the input voltage/freq as long as it's within a certain range - If it goes out of that range, cut it off and replace t...
cd burning speed
Check out a few online reviews for data CD-Rs; I assume that the quality of data CDs a particular writer will produce is closely correlated with the quality of audio CDs (this assumption may be wrong). Some actually perform _better_ at higher writ...
PS Audio Multiwave
I haven't gotten a multiwave yet, but here's what I hear about multiwave and heat. It does indeed make the powerplant run hotter (especially the 300, not so much the 600). The multiwave option also allows you to adjust the output voltage. Accordin...
Problems with U.P.S.
First: I've used UPS for a bunch of things: computers, stereo equipment, books, a lot of mail-order stuff.... I think I've had about a 20% damage rate -- but I haven't really been keeping track. I'm not a big UPS fan. --------------- Second: Grump...
Most detailed speakers in 1K range?
Try the NHT 2.5i's (but I'd stay away from the older "non-i" versions). They're quite detailed, and have a pretty good reach into the bass as well. The NHT's are definately not for everyone -- they can easily sound a bit bright or scratchy or hars...
Can speaker cables damage amplifiers?
Well, I don't know what it means in this case (common usage), but I can tell you what it means in layman-engineering terms. Take Rockvirgo's email, the part about the wave being reflected back negatively. If the power amp has a feedback loop, it'l...
Top manufacturers!
There are a lot. I just started into this a few months back (maybe 8 or so), and here's a few things I did: look through the sales here and other places, use Audiogon to find the manufacture's web page and read up on them. Read reviews (there will...
Worst Rock Band Ever !!!!
I'd have to vote for "Faster Pussycat". An 80's band. Terrible. I don't think they ever produced anything good -- but none the less managed to get fairly popular. I (fortunately) completely forgot of the existance of this band until my girlfriend ...
Best Power Conditioner for HC Amplifier
I'd second the PS Audio device. But for a high current amp, they can get quite pricy. I've got a Sim Audio W-5 powered by the 600 watt version of the PS Power Plant. The sound is better, and I can actually play it louder with the PP than straight ...
Progressive Scanning
Whoa! Progressive scan DVD players still have scan lines -- but they are output progressively rather than interlaced. Remember interlaced monitors from way back? That's pretty much how (most) TV's operate. The refresh rate is at 60Hz, but it only ...
High Quality Step Down Transformer?
Try the PS Audio power plant. An expensive option, but it should improve sound quality as well as provide you with the correct voltage. They take input from 95 - ~270 Volts, and put out 120. Its $2k (new) for 600-700 watts output at 120V.
Amplifier Suggestions?
I agree with Lihifiguy -- can't go wrong with one of the McCormack DNA's. You can also try the Sim Audio Moon W-5. There's one listed on Audiogon for $2600. YBA is also good. The 3a is in your price range (2k), but maybe underpowered at 45Watts. T...
Dedicated line questions
The PS Audio power plant does a pretty good job at making dedicated power irrevelant (although I must admit that I havn't tried my system with dedicated power to compare it to the power plant). One thing that it does _not_ make irrevalent is a ded...
Testing...Paradigm Reference
What about the PSB Stratus Gold i's. I've heard a lot of good things about them -- especially in comparison to the Paradigms. Unfortunatly, not a PSB dealer anywhere near me. Regardless, I have a pair of Paradigm 100's (v2), and love them.
HT ADVICE plz and bst 5ch amp for ~$1k
Check out the EAD Powermaster 500. 5x100 watts. Does a good job with 2 channel audio as well. Used ones can be found on Audiogon for $1300.
