GIK Acoustics will do a room evaluation for free so it says at their site. I've never used it but I've bought panels from them, they are real nice.
Renovation - Room Placement and New Speaker Suggestions
I’m finalizing the layout for the parlor living room in my place in Brooklyn under renovation. I could really use the community's expertise on speaker placement, as well as some gear recommendations.
This is an semi-opem floor plan living room. So I'm trying to balance high-quality acoustic performance with the room's everyday aesthetics and traffic flow. A dedicated listening room this not.
My Current Setup (which I quite like):
- Amp: Hegel H590 (I love this amp and it’s definitely staying).
- Speakers: Monitor Audio Silver 7G.
- Serves as music and TV source.
The Room:
- Dimensions 1: Full area is 132" across width, 206" length from pocket door wall to front of window wells and 126" floor to ceiling height.
- Dimensions 2: The short wall where TV indicated is 6 feet wide and the TV (Samsung Frame) will be 55". Same width from eastern wall to western tv wall (I.e. 132").
- Layout: See photos and layout plan attached of this floor.
- Acoustical Treatment: I have rockwool and isopad 6mm placed on sub floor and the eastern wall that does not have the doorway. 'Also doing sound decouple clips on living ceiling.
What I Need Help With:
1. Placement: Based on the photos and layout, where would you optimally position the speakers and listening sweet spot in this space? I'm trying to figure out how to get the best soundstage without the system completely dominating the room's flow. Assume the I will want to have the speakers/amp also serve the TV input, so the sweet is likely oriented to a seated listener/watcher on the couch. I would consider alternate layouts.
2. Speaker Recommendations: I'm seriously considering swapping out the Monitor Audio Silver 7Gs. They are physically quite large and imposing for the the placement on the short wall where the TV is likely to be located. . Since the Hegel H590 has a massive amount of power and grip, I know it can drive almost anything. What are your favorite smaller-footprint floorstanders or high-end stand-mount monitors that pair beautifully with the H590 and can properly fill an open parlor space without taking it over visually?

I'm not sure what the dimensions were for your Monitor series, but I really love the Ascend Acoustics ELX towers with RAAL ribbon tweeter. Exceptional sound and people love them for either home theater or music. I used them for music. I wrote a review about them, which I stand by. Very very reasonable footprint -- and while very solid, they're aboug 50 lbs and can be moved easily. |
@12many agreed room layout and treatment is one of the biggest sound drivers. In my view it's #2 behind speakers. @vinylvin , I'll check out gik acoustics @hilde45 will read up but another tower setup is like just keep my MAs. My assumption is they are just too large and constrained too much by bBeing closed to wall |
