Relocated, new, much smaller listening space. Need speakers that won't break the bank

I haven't posted on Audiogon in years. (I was the OP on the giant "Ohm Micro Walsh Tall" thread.)
We've moved twice in the past two years for my work and are finally somewhat settled in the Phoenix area.
Long story short: when we moved, I had to sell my beloved Spatial Audio open baffle speakers. In their large boxes, they would've been difficult to ship halfway across the country. Now, two years after the first move, I'd like to set my rig up again, as it's all been boxed up since we left our home of over 30 years.
I have a much smaller listening space than before. My associated gear consists of A Vinnie Rossi LEO integrated amp (25 "great watts" into 8 ohms), a SOTA Sapphire turntable, a CD transport and DAC, and a hi-res file streamer.
I'm looking for pair of small footprint speakers that'll work well in a fairly small space and don't need a ton of room between the speakers and the wall behind them. (I'm thinking of trying "diagonal" placement relative to the room corner.) I'm open to small floor standers, so as not to incur the additional cost of good stands.
I value solid imaging, an immersive soundstage and accurate timbre. And I'd rather have well defined, textured bass rather than lots of boom.
New or used is fine. Budget, ideally is $1000 or less for the pair (yikes, I know, that's a tight budget).
Okay, have at it. What should I be looking at. Something used on the 'gon would be fine.

I vote for a compact 3 way, decent size woofer, so no sub(s) needed. no rear port, perhaps low on a stand that aims the tweeters up at seated ear height so they do not appear as large as they are. like these KLH Model 5 with a 10" woofer too big? their KLH Model 3 (2 way), with an 8" woofer https://www.crutchfield.com/p_700M3MHG/KLH-Model-Three-West-African-Mahogany.html

@dz13 Is onto something with the Quads. I have the Z-4 in my main system and have owned the S-5 towers. I think Quad makes great gear for the money. Those S-2 could be a good option. And the smaller S series towers as well if you can find a pair. |

I'm learning about new brands and new equipment that didn't exist the last time I was in the market. Those Chesky speakers look very cool, thanks for the reference. @dz13 Those little Quads are very pretty. I''ll have to look at reviews... a little over my budget but a local sale could be nice. @maxwave The SOTA turntable is about 40 years old, purchased when I was single with no family obligations! ;-) I got a manufacturer discount on that Vinnie Rossi LEO (long discontinued) when I decided to purchase it after I reviewed it for Part Time Audiophile. But if I had to replace those components at today's prices, I couldn't afford to do so. More replies pending... |
