Question for the older folks- did you ditch vinyl when cd arrived?

Never!  I added high quality CD 's to my music plan.  Most autos had CD players back then, so I would burn my own off a wonderful Pioneer Elite CD player / burner.  It was a nice unit!  But alas, a plastic piece broke in the shuttle drive and no parts are available....so sad to scrap a $1K player due to a plastic part....

I dumped my vinyl when cassette tapes got big, mid 1980s. My roommate had a Nakamichi tape deck, Carver amp, B&O suspension turntable and Dahlquist speakers in our tiny dorm room. I had a decent Teac tape deck at home. We recorded off the radio and from vinyl albums spending money on high end cassettes and fussing over every detail. I still have some vinyl. Mostly hate it.

Also, I don't regret not having all my great old vinyl because it had been played for years on a cheap record changer........remember those? Vinyl stacked on vinyl. Sliding around on top of each other. Ruined most of them. So no loss.

I started with CDs in the late 80's. Still buying them now.

A story about vinyl vs CD. My uncle was an "eccentric" neurologist living in the French Quarter of New Orleans when I was a kid. This would have been mid 1970s. I remember his music room. A full wall of vinyl. All classical. All MacIntosh components and enormous Klipsch speakers. We used to visit him every few years. 

When I visited him when I was in college the vinyl was gone, replaced by a wall of CDs. He ran from vinyl as soon as he was able. And while I don't know the details, Sony and several other CD producers would send him pre-release classical CDs for his input. He had an audiophile's ears and an exhaustive knowledge of classical music.

So whatever other folks heard in early CDs that led them to stick with vinyl it clearly didn't bother my uncle. And I admired him so much that I followed his example when CDs came out.
