From Merlin TSM bme to Studio Electric M4

I want to preface by saying that I’m quite happy with the Merlin’s, just looking for a change of pace. Love the midrange and soundstage provided by the TSM’s and I’m looking for something similar, but with just a bit more dynamics. I like that the M4’s are acoustic suspension like the Merlins as room constraints dictate close proximity to front wall. These will be augmented by a pair of REL T5X and driven by an Anthem STR integrated amp (yah, I know the whole Merlin and tubes argument). I’ll also add that I don’t have the ability to go and audition various speakers, I’m restricted to buying online, and preferably from a vendor that offers returns.

Due to room constraints I can only manage 8-10 inches off the front wall, so I figured rear ported wasn’t going to work, and I like what I get with the sealed Merlin’s. I suppose I could also get away with front ported. I currently have a pair of PSB Passif 50’s sitting in my cart, and since PSB has a 60 return with negligible shipping I might just give them a try. This exercise is more scratching of an itch than anything else as I like what the Merlin’s give me, just want to see what else is out there.

I have about 10" between the speaker and back wall.  The M4 are so good, they won’t be leaving here anytime soon.

The quality and quantity of bass from a small speaker is amazing.  Pair with an 8" to 12" sub depending on room size and you have a killer compact system.

@yogiboy Yes, you're right. My mistake. I've had not had a problem with placement with the Fritz and I've not heard any "port effects" (such as chuffing), so perhaps the OP might still consider. But thanks for the correction.

You can plug the rear ports on the Carbon 7's or my REV 7 models with the ScanSpeak 7 inch Revelator mid/bass drivers although they will then not go as low- (<35 Hz or so ported vrs 45 Hz plugged) but since you have subs you won't be missing out on the first octave.  BTW- Your Merlins don't go that low.  Also you can filter those frequencies with the Anthem Room Correction.

8-10 inches out from the wall should be fine unless you are in a very small room.

Thanks, Fritz
