I was never a big cable person. Always just upgrading just to the first few tiers of quality for interconnects and speaker cables, but, using stock power cables. On my latest iteration of my system, I upgraded all my interconnects (OCC) and power cables to much higher quality, and when it came time to upgrade my 12 foot speaker cables which were already good quality, I went with very, very thick cables using very thin strand copper (OFC). I was instantly shocked with how much more bass my speakers generated.
Changing audio beliefs
Are there any audio beliefs you once held to firmly that you no longer subscribe to?
I was an ardent believer in cables. I still believe cables matter but now not so much. Beyond a basic level of competence in the cable and connector, in my opinion, the rest is smoke and mirrors. Of course, it’s also possible that at my age (senior citizen) cables just do not matter anymore

My biggest change in beliefs about audio is that it is no longer the center of my domestic life. Some years ago I started setting up a room that happened to have some audio equipment in it rather than setting up the audio equipment and hoping the room was still usable for other purposes. Acoustically challanged but esthetically and comfort fulfilling. |
Thanks for your cordial clarification. I suspect we have more in common than not. I most certainly do not have music playing all the time. But neither can I imagine life without music or the arts in general. For me, creative expression is central to who I am. FYI, I never became much of a Classical music fan, to my parents’ disappointment. I played guitar as a hobbyist for 50 years, having discovered early on that gigging wasn’t for me and this no doubt sharpened my musical ear. Injury compelled me to give up playing and writing poetry has become my focus at this stage of life. There are certainly things that are on a par with music for me: my marriage, my spiritual life, canine companions and appreciation for nature. In the end, I view all of these as aspects of one thing.

@stuartk , Sorry to hear injury kept you from one of your life's joys. You never know when life is gonna throw a banana peel in front of you. It's good you found another creative outlet. I think Voltaire said : "Poetry as the music of the soul." |
