The Schiit Lyr 3 versus the Schiit Lyr 5

Hi All,

I have low impedance headphones, 32 ohms. I've been cross referencing headphone amplifiers to see if the current and the impedance are compatible with my newly acquired HEDD Audio D1's. I do like my D1's a lot by the way. I will say that most OTL tube amplifiers are not recommended for lower impedance headphones. Currently, I'm using a Schiit Audio Lyr 3 with a Linlai Elite 6SN7. I'm using the Lyr 3 as a volume knob given that I'm running RCA's from the tape out's on my power amplifier to the tape in's on the Lyr 3. The sound is probably better than it has a right to be and I only notice the slightest bit of graininess from the headphone amplifier in small doses. Anyway, the question that I'm posting refers to Schiit Audio's new Lyr 5. The Lyr 5 has the ability to bypass the dual triode via a series of Mosfet transistors. I suppose this is to limit the stress on the tube for casual listening.

So are there any owners of the Lyr 5? Can anyone compare the tube quality between the Lyr 5 to the Lyr 3? I would never have a need to turn off the tube setting on the Lyr 5 and I'm thinking that the tube sound between the two amplifiers are similar enough.

I meant to add that the Quicksilver amplifier is about the only OTL headphone amplifier that I could find, that’s recommended for low impedance headphones. So that may be an option however for this post, I just wish to dial in on the Lyr 5 vs the Lyr 3.

The Quicksilver amp has an output transformer.   It is covered by the black rectangular cover.    It is not OTL.    It can drive my low impedance phones easily.  It can also drive 600 Ohm cans.

@oddiofyl Thanks for clarifying. Most likely, I read that the Quicksilver amp was an OTL amplifier from something that’s AI generated. I’m sixty three and AI creeps into my brain without me realizing it.  Anyway, I’m assuming that you’re happy with the sound quality.

I believe they are naked transformers and the cover hides them    It's a great amp. Built like a tank like all Quicksilver gear.  Built just like my mid monos , solid.

Drives my Klipsch HP3 and Grado rs1 easily and sounds great.   Also drove my 600 Ohm Beyerdynamic I gave away a while back.  Super reliable.
