“Civilian” reaction to your gear?

What kind of reaction do you see/get when non-gearheads see or hear your systems?
I have gotten the full spectrum- one person called my assembly of gear obnoxious (call me obnoxious, ok, but my gear? Fighting words!). Others have been politely  (and sometimes dismissively) curious; I’ve been asked if it’s as good as Bose (I usually say “close”); and some thought this level of music reproduction at home was not possible. Many have asked what does each “box” do.
For the genuinely curious I tell them “sit hear” followed by “what would you like to hear”? I play their choice (thank you Qobuz) and invariably the expression on their is quite positive.

it's mostly about the albums and the turntable, asking if it's still a thing and if I am somehow stuck in the 80s still.

I think that those civilians that say they admire it are just being polite, sensing my enthusiasm.

I sometimes muse about what others might think about my gear heap but am absolutely fine with the fact that most don't care at all. Maybe some think it's overindulgent nonsense (although it's clear I'm a musician) but I'm having too much fun with it to care much.

Great post. My best friend of over 42 years, first time he heard it, I turned the lights out, played “The  Look Of Love” by Diana Krall. When the song was over, I flipped the lights on and he had tears literally streaming down his face…he was speechless. This is not the crying kind of man. He never was…ya that was all he needed to say…

I  had to be careful not to play my system too loud when my brother was home in the next room watching TV. I was using KLH Nine full-range ESL's. They could play quite loud on music peaks.
