Your turntable history

When did you get your first turntable and what’s been your turntable history since then ?

My first turntable was the Victor 5 phonograph and they say..."you never forget your first"!. ;  )

All interesting.  I'm surprised by the number of former BSR owners, 7 so far.  So they must have been common in inexpensive "starter" systems.  And the count could be higher since a few just identified an all-in-one system with no names.

Investigating a Vintage TT to learn if the mechanical interfaces are optimised seems the road less travelled.

We are talking about the Vinyl Source, where the groove modulus interface is used parts of an assembly of parts, where dimensions belonging to certain parts are low microns.

Microns Matter, heavily used TT's with lots of years of service behind them will most likely be measured with tolerances in 100ths of a mm, not low 1000ths of a mm.

1975 Technics SL 23 Belt drive

1979/80 Sony 6 disc CD player

2019 (Covid) Technics 1350 DD

2023 Pioneer PL 707

Current 2025 Dennon  DP62L

1972 Dual 1215s with Shure M91ED. Upgraded to mid level Empire I like much better. Sony receiver and Advents.

1977 Technics SL23 Horrible rumble. Traded for;

Denon DP31L with Grado Gold. Basic table but very solid. Still works! I gave it to my niece.

Thorens TD320 with Ortofon X3 but AT ML (don’t remember model) was much better.

VPI Super Prime (Upscale Audio) with Hana SH. Excellent set up. Should’ve kept it.

Technics 1300G with Ortofon X40. Fits my limited space much better than clunky VPI. But VPI was much richer detailed and smoother,

I’ve kept every LP since elementary school. Now over 2,500. “Hey Hey We’re the Monkees”
