Trinnov Amethyst

For those of you not familiar with Trinnov, they dominate the Home Theatre market with effectively very advanced preamps called processors. Recently, I rolled the dice having not heard one in a 2-channel system, and pulled out (not sold) a Audio Research Preamp (Ref6se), Holo Audio May KTE (DAC), Holo Audio Red (streamer) and a miniDSP SHD (active crossover and room correction processor) and purchased and replaced them with a Trinnov Amethyst. The Amethyst products is about 5 years old and is designed with the audiophile in mind. It is a beautiful unit and now that I’ve had it in my system for a few weeks, I am overjoyed with the performance it brings to my system. Imaging and sound staging are fantastic and whether I’m using my Rega P10/Umami Red/Rega Aura or am just listening to streaming or my library from my dedicated i9 PC with 2T of music, it sounds fantastic. Easily bettering the imaging and sound staging of the other equipment listed above. Also, a fantastic aspect of this product is the US Based, over the phone, real technical support getting it installed, setup and calibrated. Chuck provided fantastic support holding my hand with this intimidating product. But now that I’ve had it and fiddled with its settings, I don’t know why I was intimidated. It is really pretty simple to use and offers LIGHT YEARS more capability than other, very expensive, preamps.

Hi Bill,

As luck would have it, I just took my Amethyst over to a fellow audiophiles house yesterday and we set up his OB GR Research Otica’s. He has the mains with a fully passive crossover and he has their triple threat OB servo subs. We used the amethyst to manage the mains and the sub in each channel. We had limited time so we opted to use the least time consumed method for setup which is to use the bass management setup on and stereo 2.2. Currently, he’s using HQ player and audio lens to manage them and we did a comparison of both systems and we each thought that the Amethyst did a better job integrating the bass between the mains and subs. That may not sound like a lot, but literally, we just hooked it up and then ran the optimizer wizard (measurements) and started listening. We did almost no fiddling with the many, many options other than setting a target curve that he likes. Whereas with the audio lens option, he’s had literally years to fine tuning, and yet we both thought that the imaging was tighter and had a deeper sound stage with the Trinnov. I think the Amethyst would work very well with the Duetas. I’ve owned several Apogees over the years and, although fantastic, I think they could use some help producing a better (flatter) response.

i hope that helps,

Paul

Thanks Paul,

Note: I don't have subs with the Apogees but will use the Amethyst crossover to replace the Apogee crossover.

Just need some reassurance that the Amethyst will work better than a 'standard' preamplifier and external crossover

Regards,

Bill

You’re welcome, Bill. It will make your fantastic speakers sound better than they ever could on their own or with a miniDSP/Dirac which I also have years of experience using.
