Thanks. I'm 60 years young. I've been building my system since I was 20 years old.
My new speakers
After owning Monitor Audio PL500 II speakers for 10 years, I’ve purchased my last speakers, YG Acoustics Sonja 3.3s. They are definitely different than my Monitor Audio PL500 II speakers. In my opinion, Monitor Audio PL500 II speakers offer a great value and do many things well. BUT, the Sonja 3.3s are clearer, tonality is improved, more dynamic and instruments/singers are more palpable. I’m not suggesting a night and day difference, but easily discernible differences. Unfortunately, Incremental improvements are very expensive in this hobby. I would say that I’m done, but I’m sure I’m going to change my Chord Dave DAC.

Hi @ricred1 again - congrats on getting there! Very few of us do. I’m curious if you have any further observations on implementing the #32s. Surely the new speakers don’t need them for extended range or dynamic ability, but perhaps for sound staging. I know the size and shape of my room necessitated the need for a pair of #31s (wouldn’t have been able to get #32s up my narrow stairwell) to address some cancellations. But - as you know better than I do - the sound stage and spatial information they brought to my system was almost unbelievable. Pretty amazing if your new speakers are better off without them! Best, |
mgrif104, Thanks. If you ever read any of my post regarding subwoofers, I always say it isn't about the bass of REL's, but how they improve the sound stage and spatial information. I played around with the settings and finally have them right. My crossover is set to 24 hz and the volume at 12. This settings augments very low bass, doesn't interfere with the mids/highs, but improves the soundstage and spatial information. So yes, my system benefits from using dual REL No. 32s. It's amazing how you can't hear what the 32s are doing until you turn them off. |
Congrats on your Sonja 3’s. The REL 32’s are the perfect match unless you go with the Basis subs. I have the Hailey 3’s with a pair of 31’s. Like you, I have the REL’s set at 25 Hz and level around 10 or less. I played with the parametric settings but didn’t care for it.
Regarding your DAC upgrade, I’d recommend that you have a listen to the MSB’s. They will transform your system and will work beautifully with the Oladra. They just announced their Palisade that’ll be released in the 4th quarter of this year. You can also get full MSRP value to trade up to the next level through an authorized dealer. I received my Premier a few weeks ago and love it. They’re a great small company who really supports their customers and dealers. I’m local to them, so they greeted me warmly and gave me an impressive factory tour.
Happy listening! |
