Earth Day, turn those amps OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Earth Day, turn those amps OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've said it before, I'll say it again, it is Environmentally IRRESPONSIBLE to leave your equipment on for long periods of time, before or after, or truly despicable, ON all the time!

On, 20 mins, listen, done, off!

Doctors, Lawyers, Trust Fund Kiddos, come on now.

Where were you in 1970?, I was there in Manhattan (went to college at Pratt in Brooklyn 1966-1970)

As an alternative description, I was recently with an EE who is a long term friend and who has built equipment for me for over 30 years and is expecting to have my design brief/his custom design Pre-Amp ready for the end of June. This date results in the concept through to the build being more than a year; nearly eighteen months to propose a conceptual design, through to design and production completion.

The conversation drifted into the new SS Phonostage and my desire to get multi-usage hours through the Phon' using a reverse RIAA and CD Source.

The conversation ended up with the requirement for the reverse RIAA to be usable for the intended application, which, when produced as discussed, made it fit for purpose.

The same conversation then became my agreeing to the methodology and how I would be using the CD Source / SS Phon' to get an extended 'Burn In'.

My EE friend was horrified at my proposal of usage of the SS Phon' and what he now knew was done with other owned Phon's.

The EE friend retracted their support if I was to use the hours suggested for the 'Burn In', which were suggested to be undertaken with a CDP-SS Phon' - SS integrated amp in use 24/7 for approx' 5-7 Days per input. If this was to occur no support to produce a usable reverse RIAA was being offered.

Support is offered if I am saving Stylus life (which is the main reason for the methodology), and reduce my usage to times I can be present and power off after a period of time.

Note: This EE friend is the same person who produced for me a Phonostage - valve pre-amp- valve stereo power amp and Valve monoblocks, which started as projects approx' 30 years ago. The same advice back then was to be vigilant and have eyes on the Valve equipment, not leaving it unattended and powered on. Thirty years on; and plenty of unwanted workshop experiences, have made the individual speak with more conviction on the subject of power on, to the point the notion is immediately dismissed.

My initial proposal was strongly advised against, as the increased risk of causing a fire is very real. It was explained how many devices in the workshop had started to smoulder or actually catch fire when being repaired for customers and undergoing fault-finding and reliability testing of a circuit following a local repair to a circuit. Ir was made known that circuits that have worked without fault when exposed to extensive power-on were fire risks.

Explain to an insurer that the audio was continuously powered on; and now I need a claim for a New Home (worst-case scenario, if a loss of life is not the result).

Certain subjects within a forum should be censored, and this is one where seeds should not be planted, as risk is the result.

My Planted Seed is: Do Not Promote Power On, Promote  Power Off!! -- Power Off!! -- Power Off!!

When advising someone who is to have their first-ever visit to the City, would a person who is advising on a personal level suggest the following:

" When navigating the busy streets/avenues, do not use the designated pedestrian crossings to cross over to the opposite pavement, and do not look to the left or the right when crossing a main drag /Street"

I doubt the advice would be given as personal advice, but in a forum, I'm sure a member posting to an inquiry would make such a suggestion.

I say there are other alternative suggestions to be offered, and possibly adopted, that are much more valuable to a person when adopted.

If I stated your Vehicle Engine was a much better performing engine when having become a certain temperature. Suggesting Vehicles were left running 24/7, I'm sure a unanimous agreement from a broad selection of Vehicle users would be the follow-up laughsmileyWhat do other Vehicle users think about being supplied with such an advisory?

From the same font of specious logic one might ask: Why don't people turn off their fridge after they're done making dinner?

In related news, the British, never in the caboose when it comes to aberrant engineering, have brought to the world the always-on gas range, or, as they are wont to say, hob. Yes, its oven(s) are on 24/7, presumably so that if one were compelled to boil mutton straightaway, one could.

The first Electric Fridge and Electronic design Audio device were produced at very similar era, with the Fridge being a well-established mainstream product by the rhe the audio device was first marketed.

The Fridge, and the later available Freezer, that came to the market later than both the fridge and audio devices, are both designs that are with their design intent to be continuously on, as this is the design that keeps the stored food stuff for an extended period to not perish.

Even the fridges are known to have caused a fire in a domestic environment. The initial cause of the fire in the link is a Fridge /Freezer catch fire.

  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grenfell_Tower_fire

Fridges and Freezers are approx'100 years in progressive design to be permanently on 24/7 and not catch fire, but guess what; they do!!

Audio devices are not with 100 years of progressive design to be kept with power on as a 24/7 appliance is!!!!

The only other permanent power-on appliance I can think of in my home is an electrical supply to a water boiler/home heater, where this type of design is currently near 140 years of being a progressive design to prove the fit for purpose of the supplied products, which are scrutinised by regulators and industry bodies before making their final stop in the market.

Does an audio-related device receive the same attention???

Power Off is the simplest of safeguards, where audio devices are the subject.
