I am interested to see the responses as I use a SMPS myself. Do you have a hardwire connection to your router or are you using wireless? Do you have any optical isolation or switches between your router and your streamer?
LPSU foe modem and router - how important?
How important is powering a modem and router with a linear power supply as opposed to SMPS. I run my system on a powecell 8 SX and a couple Furutech ETP50s with NCF line purifiers for my REL six pack down stream. Using iFi iPower SMPS on router and modem now. Is it recommended to use an LPSU instead? My system is pretty resolving.

@zlone asked good questions. If you have optical isolation (i.e., a fiber optic cable break before your streamer) or if you are using wireless, a LPS would be less likely to make much difference. Another option that might help would be additional transformer isolation as provided by the Network Acoustic muon or ENO products. I use a LPS to power my modem and router but I happened to have an extre HD Plex power supply sitting around doing nothing. I run fiber from the music server in my network room to the streamer in my main system room and I can’t say I heard much/any difference between using the stock SMPS on my modem and router and powering them with the LPS. |
@zlone @mitch2 Thanks for responding. I’ve tried to address noise throughout my system. My connection is hard wired with Furutech NCF8 LAN. I have a PhoenixNET, as well as OPTO DX galvanic isolation in addition to a pair os Wave Stream BNC’s from OPTO DX to DAVE The modem/router would be the final piece I’m just wondering if the cost of a separate lpsu is worth the cost for what it would deliver sonically Synergistic Research Powercell 8 SX Sean Jacobs SC4/ARC6 lpsu to DAVE Mini Teddy SE to M Scaler OPTO DX is battery powered. 2 NCF Line Purifiers on dual Furutech ETP60s connected to my REL 6 pack

Based on my understanding of your system I think the PhoenixNet will cover any issues coming from your router. You are right to consider everything, it all matters, but your setup looks pretty good. I have been heavily tweaking my digital chain lately, with very good results. The latest controversy is the sound difference between Ethernet cables with shields connected on both ends vs those with floating shields vs simple Cat 6 with plastic terminations. But I think I am close to done. ;-) |
