Shunyata Venon V16 or Furman Elite 20pfi

Hi, All,

So I currently have a Furman Elite 20pfi with everything in my rig (system does double duty for music and HT) plugged into it. Including the Puron AC Power Conditioner (this thing absolutely lowered the noise floor when I plugged it into the Furman). I took advantage of the 40% off sale and bought the V16. Received it yesterday. However I see that the V16 does not offer surge protection whereas the Furman does. I did not realize this. I should mention I have my system on a dedicated 20Amp circuit and I also have a whole house surge protector. Is this a deal breaker, should I just return the Shunyata? I did read, almost unanimously, that the V16 will improve the sound and lower cross interference by isolating.

Thoughts? And should the V16 not offering surge protection be a deal breaker?

Thanks in advance...,

Thanks for the thoughtful reply @jrareform. Interesting point on the amp. When I bought my Earthquake Joseph Sayhoun the owner off Earthquake called me and we spoke quite a few times. What a great guy. And boy he is one hell of a character! He was adamant about going direct to the wall with the amp. I mean he was adamant. The funny thing is before the Earthquake I had the Simaudio Moon Titan 5 channel. I had always had that going into the Furman. I reached out to the folks at Sim and they too insisted I go direct to the outlet and bypass the Furman. As soon as I did this I noticed immediate improvements! I was shocked at how much cleaner and open the sound was. I couldn’t have imagined just bypassing the Furman how much the sound improved…to your point that was the Furman not Shunyata. But I’ll try it! Appreciate that tip! Only that would suck if that improves the sound is the Furman (soon to be the Shunyata) is right next to my amp. The outlet is quite a bit away, so I had to get a 10 foot power cable (luckily found a great deal on a used Shunyata Alpha V1) to reach the outlet. So if going to the Shunyata improves the sound I’ll have a thick a$$ 10 ft power cable within less than 2 feet between the amp and V16😂🤷🏼‍♂️. Good stuff thanks for the reply!

@zlone appreciate the reply. I do kind of have high hopes for the V16 after reading all the comments favoring the V16. But indeed only one way to tell. Thankfully I was assured that all Shunyata units have surge protection. Thankfully I’m in NH and while we do get our share of thunder storms, it’s nothing like Fl.

Well, I bought my Furman Reference 15 for about $400 used and have seen others price for under $1,000 over the last 6 months or so. You just have to be patient and not be willing to settle for something that doesn't do what you needed to do. The reference series is designed to be used with audiophile equipment, it has current reserves, balanced outputs, surge protection among other features that make it the right choice for resolving system.  My philosophy is that when building a system it's important to understand your needs and don't get distracted by half solutions that you'll eventually have to replace. Ultimately, you end up spending more money and not getting what you need.

@jrareform

Don't just listen to (other) people's opinions on these things!!

You forgot to add “other”, as in just me and mine.

Thankfully I was assured that all Shunyata units have surge protection.

The electromagnetic breaker will not function as a surge protector. It will flip if there is a current surge, but not if there is a voltage spike which is what surge protectors do.
