Sonny Rollins - Rip

Tenor Madness.   One of my favorites.... and it's killer sound.  I lucked out on that find.

Oh yeah, awesome! He made it to 95, evidently stopped performing in 2014.

"Sonny Rollins, the legendary tenor saxophonist known as the "Saxophone Colossus," died on Monday, May 25, 2026, at his home in Woodstock, New York, at the age of 95.  No specific cause of death was released, though his publicist confirmed he had been largely housebound in recent years due to physical problems, including pulmonary fibrosis, which forced his retirement from performing in 2014.

Rollins was one of the last living greats of the bebop era and is celebrated for revolutionizing jazz improvisation with his bold tone and relentless experimentation.  His career spanned over six decades, featuring landmark albums like Saxophone Colossus and Way Out West, as well as a notable collaboration with the Rolling Stones on their 1981 album Tattoo You.  He won two Grammy Awards and received a National Medal of the Arts, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential saxophonists in history alongside Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.

He is survived by his nephew, Clifton Anderson, and nieces Vallyn Anderson and Gabrielle DeGroat; he was predeceased by his wife and manager, Lucille, who died in 2004. Rollins, born Theodore Walter Rollins in Harlem in 1930, overcame early struggles with drug addiction and incarceration to become a spiritual and artistic giant, famously practicing for years on the Williamsburg Bridge to refine his craft."
