Monitor Audio Gold 50 vs Studio 89

Hey just curious if anyone has heard both to compare or even just share your experiences with either if not both. I dont have a way to audition either without taking a chance, but these are similarly priced. Are they nearly identical performance wise? Or is there something else going on here such as better/more refined treble in the studio 89 at the expense of lower bass? Lemme know if you're in the know, I'd appreciate it!

I hear what you’re saying about getting the 300. I would like to point out that as nice as the ribbon tweeter is, the 8 inch woofer is kind of the star of the show without realizing it.  So in hindsight if the room could handle it, I would look at a 500.

The same MPD III Tweeter is used in all the speakers. The tweeter housing is implemented differently.

  • Studio 89: The tweeter is integrated into a unique, compact MTM (Mid-Tweeter-Mid) point-source array. It features a specialized gold/copper-colored aesthetic trim and an intricate hexagonally-patterned mesh grille derived directly from the Hyphn.
  • Gold 100 / 300 / 500 6G: The tweeter is housed in a clean, isolated metal "mid-pod" enclosure alongside the 3-inch midrange driver (on the 3-way models), matching the visual design and specific waveguide needs of the Gold 6G cabinet faces

Yeah I can kind of get what yoir getting at with the larger woofer, but lemme up the ante once more n just say if I was going to invest in the gold 500 I'd probably spring for the Platinum 200 as it really is the perfect size for my needs... but anyhow! lol

Just out of curiosity, were you able to compare or discern much difference in bass response out of the 89s vs the 50s? In the reality of it, if I decided to move on a stand mount / bookshelf they would eventually move into a rear channel role of just "jump into the rotation" type of role. Obviously if I went w floor standers of a higher cost it would be a much more permanent/long term situation. Im more at the stage right now where im curious where Monitor Audio is going to sound in my environment... its just next to impossible to audition in my neck of thr woods being pretty far from any highly populated city. Basically just like trying out different/newer selections as economically as possible! Appreciate your input so far, thanks!

gkelly, I should probably do my due diligence and also ask about your impressions on the 100 6G. Years ago my best friend had a 3 way bookshelf with an 8" woofer in it. It was a long time ago, 25 years or so, but I was impressed none the less so maybe its something I should give more attention to. Does the 100 6G go pretty deep in-room? Sure, I can look up specs all day, but sometimes hearing by word of mouth can illustrate better the capabilities. A friendly nudge can make all the difference between here or there lol

I have never seen or heard either, but a glance at both:

Both are low sensitivity, 85, 86, and those ratings are at 4 ohm, and 6 ohm. That requires more power, especially for instantaneous peaks. Not good for trying tubes which I prefer.

Don’t assume 1 larger woofer has more bass than two smaller ones, you have to hear them. Either model will want 1 or better yet 2 subs, in which case, look for a compact 3 way with ’enough’ bass. Higher efficiency (try tubes some day), higher impedance easier to drive.

both have rear ports. I'm not a fan of ports, if so, front to avoid the potential reflected sound from rear or side ports.

I would not consider either, but, if you or the wife had to have them, and I had enough power for 4 ohms, low sensitivity, I would order the 89’s, try to get return privilege’s just in case.

Visual Appearance: I’d rather have a slightly taller 3 way (tweeter at the top), positioned lower on a floor stand that tilts back so they don’t look large, but the tweeters are directed at ear height seated listening position.

KLH, others use this method, different slants, current production: 5 or 8 degrees based on what size model

this seller makes wooden ones for vintage Models, closer to the floor
