Tubes- much easier and easier to hear and measure the difference in performance.
One important tip: when trying out different tubes, make sure the tubes test good on a tube tester!! Otherwise you can be wasting your time as the best brands around but the tube is bad won't sound as good as a cheap brand but the tube is good.
Caps can be harder to tell apart and you have to open the equipment to change them out.
