My friend can’t stand being surrounded, so even though seating is 1st come, 1st choice, and we were early, he kept going and going, until the last table against the wall, I had never been so far. Well, we had a sideways view, over the drummer, and I’ve never witnessed all the tricky and subtle things he did with symbols, drums, sticks, brushes, tom toms ... It was like watching Leon Redbone’s horn man with a box of vintage gizmos. We would never have been aware of what Payton was doing if we sat in front. |
