What a great video! I wish I was there. I have the HeadHunters album Herbie was referring to and that tune is the best part of the album.
Thanks for sharing, you put a big smile on my face.
Jazz for aficionados
Listened to a couple of Gigi Gryce albums this morning until I started sweating. The preamp has 2 dual triode’s in it and is class A. The amps have 2 dual triode’s in each and are class A/B with the bias around 10 watts. They heat up to 130°-150° degrees and sure heat up the front of the house. Oh and it’s nearing 90° Outside. Sigh. |
Kenny Garrett will be preforming at the Blue Note in NYC this weekend. Garrett had not been mentioned on JFA for quite some time until recently by Curious Jim and its kind of odd because he is now in his 5th decade of playing, recording, composing and teaching jazz and is one of my favorite all time alto sax players. Garrett was awarded an NEA Jazz Master fellowship in 2023. Yes, IMHO, Garrett can be mentioned as an alto great along with Johnny Hodges, Art Pepper, Lou Donaldson and, I do not regret saying it, Charlie Parker. Garrett started his career in the late 70s and played with jazz greats Miles Davis and Art Blakey. Here is a trio recording session on the Warner Brothers label from 1995 with Brian Blade on the drums with Charnett Moffett and Kiyoshi Kitagawa alternating on bass: The album was named Trilogy and I believe Curious Jim mentioned he had been listening to it recently. https://youtu.be/NWLuVuk-dKo?si=iaBzHJrjWhA-vI7v And here is another album, recorded for the Mack Ave Label 2 decades after Trilogy, titled Pushing The World Away: |
I don’t recall that we ever mentioned Kelan Phil Cochran. I even searched audiogon to check, no mention of him. Perhaps some of you heard him play before, as he played on few albums of Sun Ra Arkestra. I must admit, he is new to me as well (the knowledge is fragile) which is strange since he was born I 1927. but I am more surprised that Acman has not posted some of is music before. Anyway, I am sure that kind folks at google will help you discover more.
In the meantime, something to listen. Song from his album called ’African skies’ from 1993. https://youtu.be/jKlvYGIje-M?si=Jp6CBIewTyl781ws These guys are the band that played with him also, never heard for them before as well Hypnotic Brass Ensemble https://youtu.be/nacbm4ppYi4?si=m4QJ6m- 0GWTVFeI2https://youtu.be/ggOVNYFlP7Q?si=-mbcZkjreJLim6VM
