Humminguru Nova

I’ve assembled more or less a decent analog front end. I have a few hundred records in my collection that consists of new and old vinyl - mostly mint or near mint. Now I have been buying new vinyl recently. I use Knosti Disco Antistat to wash records - one for wash, one for rinse. The records air dry.

Would a Nova be a significant step up from the Knosti? Would it be effective with new vinyl? Any reason I shouldn’t get it?

@gelle 👍

as I got to know the Nova a little better after using it multiple times with both brand new and used records, it is excellent for new vinyl. But used records, especially those featuring fingerprints, stains or other unidentified crap, definitely benefit from a manual wash as the first strep. Nova is no substitute for it. So my initial assessment still stands.

Late add to this great thread, but I’m looking at getting my very first US and could use your help.

Humminguru currently has the original HG01 on sale for $395. The Nova is $699. Will I hear the difference brought by the Nova’s better transducers on my modest system? I need the $300 more than a quieter or shorter operation cycle, but actual, non-theoretical SQ is important to me. Thanks.

Also, I buy older dirty records. My plan would be to spin clean first with surfactant, then US in distilled water only. Thanks for your fantastic advice for no surfactant in US!

There is no difference between the 2. Nova uses same transducer. Just has more features. Actual cleaning will be identical.

I use SP before HG(water only)

HG won't perform miracles but can quiet/eliminate trouble areas on used LP's the SP can't. A real scrubbing procedure like some here do- THEN HG, would likely produce better results.

Original HG good buy for $395. Good enough results to not want a Degritter or other proper US.

There is nothing improper about a HumminGuru.  Furthermore people who own both a Degritter and a HumminGuru have reported that the sonic results are essentially the same for both.  That said the Degritter is a nicer machine, no question.

Thanks for your thoughts. I had to double check HG's website to see where I might have read about an improved cleaning feature in the Nova. Here is what I found:

"The NOVA features an upgraded power drive that optimizes the dual transducers' stability and compatibility. By using two distinct power drive boards to power each transducer independently, efficiency is heightened through individual optimization of transducer performance.

Moreover, a Sweep Frequency technique is employed to identify the ideal working frequency of the transducers, ensuring uniform distribution of cavitation energy in the water and consistent cleaning action across the record surface. With these advancements, the NOVA delivers quieter and highly efficient cleaning performance."

@billstevenson

Thanks for that. It's the sonic difference for.the money that has to matter for me. Admittedly,  if some one said no difference between a wash board and an electric washing machine, I may have to take the wash board. I have too many holes to fill in my system!

So, unless someone here says the records are much cleaner with the HG05, the HG01 it will have to be. I already miss the timer, faster drying, etc...
