Having your own kids is promoting your own genes. That is selfish. If you adopt = care for a human not sharing your genes, then it looks different. But when people talk about the "altruism" of having kids, it's not any kids. Oh no. It is their kids, their genetic offspring. That is selfish.
Adopted kids is more similar to caring for a pet or plant so another living being with which you do not share that many genes. However, still a hobby in the sense of unnecessary, elective activity. The same as our audio hobby. Unnecessary and elective.

Please enjoy your hobbies, but don't make me pay for yours. And that is the case where child-free people subsidize breeders. And let's not even start with the perversity of IVF, when the world is overpopulated by about 170%, the US by around 200%, see global footprint network. Fortunately birthrates are going down, but population is still not shrinking overall.

so you don't have children. Reading about your choices and views, and assuming that they would be exposed to those, I am extremely grateful that you don't have children...

You do realize that if everyone stopped having kids today, humanity would be wiped out in approximately 80-90 years, or however long it takes all humans alive today to die off.

Therefore, if humanity is to survive, having kids is a necessity. But you call procreation an "elective", therefore what you’re really saying is that humanity has no business existing and should disappear.

@devinplombier Certainly. You also realize if we continue in the usual manner, earth will be uninhabitable. Alternatively, nature will reduced the human population with diseases [COVID anyone?], accumulation of toxins [microplastics, Pacific Garbage Patch], natural disasters [very much on the rise], water shortages [locally an issue], food shortages [currently being discussed in context of Straits of Hormuz]. 
There is a difference between steering and outlawing. Look at tobacco. It's not illegal, but discouraged in so many different ways that usage goes down. I would welcome a time when having kids is as stigmatized and discouraged as smoking. 
I find it morally better for humans to become rational and reduce population on our terms rather than having that externally imposed. But that's just me.
