Speaker hunt -> To leave or not Leave Martin Logan Behind

Hello all,

I’ve been a MartinLogan owner for about 22 years and have gone through much of their lineup, including the CLX. I’m currently running the 15A, which has been my favorite to date.

Lately, I’ve been considering a move away from electrostatics. While I’ve managed to get the 15A dialed in extremely well in my room (great stage, excellent low end integration), I’m starting to experience some long-term fatigue with the panel presentation—particularly with my core listening preferences.

Roughly 60% of my listening is hard rock/metal, with the remaining 40% being more refined material (Al Di Meola, Patricia Barber, Nils Lofgren, etc.). I also occasionally stream electronic (techno/dubstep). Vinyl is my primary source, with some streaming mixed in.

What I’m looking for:

  • Retain a large, dimensional soundstage similar to the 15A
  • Strong, controlled low-end performance
  • Improved midrange density/impact and overall drive, especially for rock/metal
  • Better long-term listenability with more dynamic “weight”

I’m currently considering the Focal Sopra No.2, but I’m open to other options in the ~$15-25K range (new or used).

I figure I’ll need a sub as well once O lose the 12” subs on the ML

I’d really value input from those who have transitioned from panels to dynamic speakers—what worked, what didn’t, and where you ultimately landed.

Current system:

  • MartinLogan 15A
  • Mark Levinson No. 585
  • Rega P8 / Ortofon 2M Black LVB 250
  • Manley Chinook SE
  • Cambridge Audio CXN V2

Room: 18’ wide (front wall) x 15’ to back wall and 9ft from listening seat to speakers

Appreciate any insights—especially from those with similar musical tastes or system paths.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't read all the replies in the thread, so please forgive me if this has been addressed: Have you tried/do you have room treatment to tame the sound? The 15A has a large panel and if you are getting reflections to your listening position that could be the source of some of your fatigue.

FYI, I have owned M-L hybrids for over 30 years now, and they do require some current to drive. While I respect your Levinson 585 and it's 200WPC and doubling into 4 ohms, there are some people that drive the 15A (and 13A) with much more power per channel. I cannot speak first hand on that series of M-Ls but FB has a couple of M-L user groups where this has been discussed. Good luck.

I don't post a lot here, but this thread caught my attention.  We have a lot of similarities.  I have been running ML 13As for 9-10 yrs, having upgraded from ML Aeon-i speakers that I kept for a decade before them.  I also listen to rock and electronic music, though as I get older I'm increasingly putting on folk and easier genres.  I find it hard to beat the sound from MLs at anything close to the price point, but if I'm being honest I complain of the same issues.  I don't think I've heard a system that images as well as my set up (I'm sure there are plenty of these out there, I just haven't personally heard them), but I do feel that my setup is lacking in tonal accuracy and midrange impact and I do get listening fatigue.

Some comments that might help:  I have hybrid tube/ss pre-amp and amps, and moving up to these components from my previous solid state pre and class D amps noticeably improved the overly bright presentation and fatigue.  It did come at the expense of a higher noise floor however.  I have silver coated interconnects, so it was interesting to read some of the comments about cable changes helping others.  Might be something to try.

The speakers that were my 2nd favorite when I purchased the 13As were actually the Focal Sopra 2s.  The Sopra 3s were noticeably better than the 2s but price and size were a consideration and the MLs I just preferred overall.  I listened to Sonus Faber, lower range Wilsons and some others I can't remember and preferred the Focals to them, so take that for what it is worth.  I can't speak to long listening session fatigue on them though.

Other than the Focals, the two box speakers in your price range that have most impressed me are the Magico A3s and the YG Acoustics Carmels.  The A3s disappeared more than (I think) any box speaker I've heard.  I have not heard the Magico S or M ranges, but those aren't in your price range.  And the Carmels really had tone and dynamic pluck down with an impressive sense of realism.

I haven't had focused listening sessions with 100s of speaker models, but from what I've heard it is hard to match the scale and staging of big panel speakers with a box, especially one in your price range.  The A3 and Carmels are small speakers by comparison, so I wonder if you'd be fully happy with them.  Would their big brothers produce the scale and impact you seek without the etch?  probably, but not at a comparable cost. I'm kinda on the lookout for something better as well, so it has been an interesting read.  Best of luck to us all : )

Hello,

I have had my Sopra 2’s for 6 years. I highly doubt

you will need a subwoofer

You need to audition the Muraudio SP1’s.  I too was a Martin Logan fan boy but when I auditioned these it was game over.  I was looking for a speaker that had a broader more 3D soundstage.  I had the Logan’s for about a decade and as you know they have the vojtko dsp processors and it felt limited.  Since there were no dealers near me,  I  called Muraudio and spoke to the VP of sales and asked if they had any demo models they wanted to sell and lo and behold they had a pair. So I struck a deal to audition these speakers. I could audition for as long as I wanted, the only catch if I didn’t like them, I had to pay for shipping back to them.  I took the risk and it paid off.  After about a week listening I was sold.  The best way I could describe what happened is the Martin Logan’s sounded processed.  The SP1 was natural and the soundstage was incredibly broad, detailed and 3D. The veil was lifted.  They will benefit from nicely blend subs which I have added two to fill out the bottom.  They are in your  price range-  find a dealer or pair to listen to. For me they were game changing.
