What Tube Preamplifier Under $1800 to Choose?

If coloration is what you are listening for, a tube preamp makes sense. Colorations/ sound manipulations are part of / in the recordings already. Likely too, the speakers / room. I listen, for the musicianship, and the composition. I think maybe, you just need more OOMPF. Try a ss preamp instead of your passive. Tubes are loved by many, and I understand why. But like everything, compromises are made with each design / execution. I am a solid state guy, and was a "passive" guy, too. Good luck. I wish you the best! Always, MrD.

I'm gonna throw the Vincent SA-32 into the mix. 

I haven't heard it but if it's anything like (probably better) than my Vincent SV-500 Integrated than it might be something worth looking into.

In that price range you may not get the tuby effect you are looking for to mask the harshness or edgyness.  I have climbed the tube pre-amp ladder and found entry level pre-amps have their own issues which to me is noise in a variety of forms.  While the tube will change the character of the current edgy in a way that you will probably like initially, over time you will recognize the new issues.

I always follow the mantra Garbage in is Garbage out.  Consider working on the source of the edgyness.

That said I have had a Schitt Freya and Decware CSP3 which are both in your price range.  I found the Freya to be noisy and never found tubes that gave me the tube bloom I was looking for.  The Decware on the other hand was not quiet either but in a different way that was much more pleasing.  The CSP3 also allows gain-riding which gives a lot of control over the tube coloration, it was fun to play with and allows changing the character of the sound without replacing tubes.  The tubes i rolled for the Freya were relatively inexpensive but did not change the character of the sound as much as the Decware.  Rolling the Decware's tubes was considerably more expensive but also more rewarding in my system.  

I bought a Freya when they first came out and have a drawer full of tubes I've tried with it...new Tung Sols, the weird Russian tubes it came with, NOS Sylvanias, Amperex, and others, and went with NOS GEs. They last a very long time and sound perfect to my earballs, and this preamp is utterly quiet which I'm very sensitive to. For amps I use a Pass XA-25 or a Dennis Had SEP tubester depending of my mood...the Freya was so inexpensive it has sort of paid for itself many times over, and if it blew up I'd get another one. A GREAT preamp (still gets a Class A rating in Stereophile). The benefit of the older Freya is the ability to pop over to the tube bypass modes to make sure the tubes are honest without the tubes shutting off.
