Herbie had a lot of talent on that set!
I had both the Brecker Bros and the Back to Back albums back in the day.
2 Trumpets And 2 Tenors. Now that’s top shelf.

@curiousjim and @acman3, This is the first album I bought by Maynard Ferguson - Conquistador 1977 – Columbia Records as a young man. At the time, I thought this was a badass album. And to me, it still is. Check out the track Mister Mellow. On that track he had more of a cadre of musicians than Herbie Hancock had on his Man-Child album track Traitor. At this time in my life I was hooked on Bob James productions, arrangements and piano playing. I thought I was so cool in those days... Oh, and I didn’t know he was Canadian.

Gefion by Jakob Bro I'm not sure how I missed this album. It's been in my Playlist for a while but I never really listened to it. It's one of those albums for late night sessions. It really hits hard sonically with extremely slow harmonic movements leaning into floating time with tons of space between phrases. It's characterized by conversational interplay rather than soloing between guitar and bass. Infinite cymbal textures instead of drums like you hear on Cantando by Bobo Stenson. The bass is deep and articulate. This recording is all about the resonance of the room and the weight of a single, well-placed note. |
