Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

For decades I went to a local record store.  Not only would they give suggestions, but if you had a request, they’d play it for you!  I also use my local library a lot. My good friend @stuartk told me about the Penguin Guide to Jazz. I got a copy from my local library and took a ton of notes!  I read e-mails.  I read forums.

All the best.

@fire_water,

I have found more Jazz and even some non Jazz here on jfa than how I and we used to get it back in the day by radio or word of mouth. And I should know cause I live in metro ATL and Jazz is all over the place in every medium you can think of. I can go crate digging and attend Jazz shows here with so much ease that even I think I may sometimes take it for granted.

Too me, jfa has been a massive depository of Jazz, especially new Jazz that I’ve been introduced to. Plus the fact that the members here try very hard to be civil to and with one another versus the keyboard bullies you may have noticed on other threads here on Audiogon. Which makes this thread a refuge unto great music, and has always been good for the mind, body and soul. Glad you are here. Enjoy and keep sharing.

I have just checked the list that @curiousjim posted, not the video, but the link with the actual list. It ends with 1040 albums and that makes sense, much more than any 50 or 100 list could ever do.

@acman3 Thanks, glad you like it...at least somebody does,haha.Nice clip of Sonny Rollins, by the way, never saw him sounding so cheerful...

@tyray By mentioning Rollins, Acman3 made me think of another heavyweight that made few albums in style you may like. Its Dizzy, here are the links

@fire_water I believe that I own almost all albums I have ever posted here and many more, of course. I do not have a streamer and not planing to have one. I can understand the use of it and the convenience that it provides but call me childish as I do not consider having a collection in a 'cloud' as a serious one.

Since you like Scandinavian jazz among other things, here are couple of albums that you may like, previously posted here as well.

Jan Johansson 'Jazz pa Swenska' from 1964.

@fire_water

I'm afraid I can make no helpful suggestions regarding the streaming phenomena you describe.

I'm glad to know you're enjoying Jazz music, though! .

We can't all be as lucky as @tyray  and live in a locale where we have easy access to live Jazz.  From roughly 2000 - 2010, we used to drive over to Oakland to catch shows at Yoshi's, which was one of the best venues in the country for Jazz but eventually they largely dropped Jazz and began hiring acts from other genres. This is somewhat of a moot point for me, now, however. Having just turned 70, my appetite for dealing with the increasingly insane Bay Area traffic has greatly diminished.
