SL-1200GME Turntable

Hey vinyl world!

What cartridge would be a good contender to pair up with my brand new Technics SL-1200GME ? Looking for a good one as my BAT VK-33SE preamp and Pass X-150.8 amp are total Titans. The Thiel speakers are always up to the task.

I use a separate VTL tube phono stage TP2.5 ,1st version .

Moving Coil

It’s not an absolute, but the guidance for impedance loading is:

cartridge coil impedance x 10, so a coil like the AT33 mentioned above is 10 ohms, thus recommended load is around 100 ohms (no need to be exact). I have the AT33PTG/II and like it very much.

Just check if one of your phono stage's MC loading options is close to the resulting combo you are considering

you have options: 100Ω, 250Ω, 470Ω, 1kΩ, 4k7Ω, 47kΩim. just divide by 10, and see if that is close to the cartridge’s coil impedance.

The reason I mention this is because there are some difficult combinations of output strength/coil impedance out there.

Moving Coil (non-replaceable stylus)

You might look at what ’trade-in’ offers the makers have.

Soundsmith has a reduced price when you trade in a cartridge with a worn stylus.

Audio Technica sold me a new AT33PTG/II for slightly less than half price a few years ago when I sent in my original one that I suspected was worn.

Others______?

OP,

this high compliance cartridge is not for your medium compliance arm, I am posting it for

OTHERS

who may have an SME or other compatible arm.

Does anyone have experience with this seller _____?

IF like me, you have a V15VxMR body, and want an original stylus with microwall beryllium cantilever, this is the same seller

AI Quickie

"The Shure V15VxMR is a discontinued moving magnet phono cartridge introduced in 1996 and sold until 2005, renowned for its exceptional trackability and ability to extract groove information at a low 1 gram tracking force

Key features and specifications include:

  • Cantilever: Utilizes an ultra-low mass Beryllium MICROWALL/Be™ tube with the highest stiffness-to-mass ratio ever, raising the mechanical resonance to 33 kHz

  • Stylus: Features a MASAR™-polished Micro-Ridge diamond tip (0.00015 x 0.003 in.) designed to minimize distortion and record wear while improving high-frequency response.

  • Performance: Delivers a frequency response of 10 to 25,000 Hz with 3 mV output voltage, offering superior signal-to-noise levels and channel separation.

  • Protection: Includes Shure’s Dynamic Stabilizer/Destaticizer to handle record warp and static electricity, alongside an exclusive SIDE-GUARD system to protect the stylus from side impacts.

The cartridge was highly acclaimed, earning an Editor’s Choice Best Buy award from The Absolute Sound in 2003, and was notably used as a reference cartridge for Sony Music’s archival operations.  While newer models offer higher frequency extensions, the V15VxMR remains a sought-after vintage unit for its warm, detailed sound and robust tracking capabilities, with replacement stylus available as the Shure VN5xMR."

btw, JICO makes an SAS replacement stylus, I have one, sounds terrific.

Do you have many MONO LPs?

Are you collecting Jazz? So many great musicians started before stereo lps in 1958, and recording techniques were quite good.

I learned here, a basic MONO Cartridge like this one, will sound better than a Stereo one playing in Mono Mode.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply. So far I've got the setup all ready to go but still waiting on a pair of new RCA cables to arrive and connect the phono to my preamp.

I'll probably still be running hot considering the cart is a high output.... I recall with my earlier preamp VK-3ix that I could barely turn the volume knob before it was too loud. My hopes now are that the VK-33se currently in my system can deal better or at least allow lower sound. Its hopefully just part of programming it

Elliot I'm not sure the TP2.5 that I have will give different cart load settings. VTL did released a TP2.5i version that might have that though.... Mine is the version before they even introduced a rumble switch.
