@dman777 yes it’s possible. Depends on what you’re looking for. All reputable sites that sell vinyl will disclose in the description whether or not it’s a remastered version. You can also use AI and ask the question. Whenever you see digitally remastered, stick with streaming. It ain’t worth it vinyl. Also, if you have CDs, same applies.
Not likeing remasters - Are origingal 90's Vinyls worth it?
I am new the vinyl world and I was going to start collecitng more of the bands where I liked the whole album. Most of the music I listen to is from the 90’s. There has been a lot of remastered albums released on vinyl (The Verve, Dinosaur Jr, Electronic (band), Cocteau Twins, etc) in the last 15 years. But everything I listen to of the remasters (on streaming or cd).... I find things I do not like about them. Ethier they were re-recorded with to much volume or something else that just keeps me from enjoying the music like I did the original.
But then that leads me down another road... getting the original vinyls. I am finding these to go anywhere from $100 to $300 which is a lot of money for me. Then I read back in the 1990s cds were the main media. The vinyl counterparts put out in the 90s did not have the same effort or sound engineering put into them to make them sound as good. Is that true?

@dman777 well there are gems out there. My main advice would be to keep an eye on the runtime per side! The remastered / digitally mastered thing doesn’t matter as much as that. In fact I’ve been perfectly happy with some digital masters. Another example - The Smith “The World Won’t Listen” was originally issued one 1 LP and its runtime is too long for that - sound bad. The reissue was actually done on 2 LP and sounds much much better! Nirvana Nevermind isn’t too long and sounds awesome on some pressings (Pallas). Perl Jam Ten has sounded awful on every incarnation I’ve had - even the original issue I paid big bucks for. The MTV Unplugged series tend to sound phenomenal, even if reissued. Some of the early Stone Temple Pilots sound great. I like Dinosaur Jr but the album I have from them circa 2010s doesn’t sound great on vinyl. |
@mulveling did you listen to the Dinosaur Jr Cherry Red 2LP Reissues on vinyl? I was wondering your take on them if you have |
I don’t have any of those sorry - but being 2 LP’s is a great start! I should try to track down a "Where You Been" of that and give it a shot - thanks for mentioning these. I have their 2016 "Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not" on vinyl. Like the music, but its sound quality is very blah. The 90s era of music is all still really hit or miss for sound quality, unfortunately. Sometimes the CD / digital file sounds great where vinyl doesn’t, and sometimes it’s not. You got bad mastering, bad recording, and the start of brick walled CDs all going on at once :( That said don’t give up on it - 90s was my coming of age era and I love the music here. I have a circa 2006 Rhino Reissue "90’s Culture Box" 6 CD set and love it - a lot of it sounds surprisingly good; not sure how they pulled it off. |
The 90s is like yesterday to me. I would think original pressings of that music are still plentiful, except that CD was taking over or had already taken over, so maybe the LPs are not so plentiful. Try to read reviews comparing re-issues to original is all I can say. Otherwise, by original pressings when and where you can find them. Take notes comparing originals to re-issues. Some companies do a good job but it's up to you to ferret out the quality. |
