New album by Marquis Hill, Sweet Surrender, brings jazz to church. Beautiful, spiritual music. Very creative.
Jazz for aficionados
I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

The group Angine de Poitrine is blowing up all over the internet. I didn’t quite get what microtonal instrumentation was until someone on the internet directed me to look at the multiples of frets on the double guitar fret necks.
I was surprised how headbangly funky they can be. Here’s a link to one of their outdoor shows in Quebec where they played a full hour set. Angine De Poitrine - Full Live Concert @ Québec 2025 And it looks like they're outdoors (with heat lamps?) in what can be described as a time of year in Quebec when it’s very cold. I went from Jaco who plays the electric bass with no frets to Angine de Poitrine who plays with multiples of frets on the double guitar fret necks. Talk about Alternative.

Music is not about "our tastes" history or filters, Angine de poitrine is not my taste, as any rock of any kind but somebody like me can love some rock group gifted with talent , The same is true with metal and i love for example "Nightwish" first version with the female singer. Music is about learning as a book reading is not only about our taste and fun but about learning...Learning is way deeply more intense than just "fun" or nostalgia ... As Acoustics is about learning not about "beautiful room panels" or about sounds, it is about the direction of sound and our ears/brain mutual control synchronisation in time and angles in pressures zones ...
Also i am from Quebec, this is a bias favoring "angine de Poitrine" or his unknown out of Quebec creative ancestor : "l’infonie" ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ER5vUYU9eE&list=PLB8FvXOFY2-CcV3GF5onTs_bFBRBAkxhF I know also enough music to know how and why Eastern music is microtonal then the perfect blending of Rock style with microtonality is not then about taste it is about learning ...( i love Arabic-Turkisch-Persian- sufi-Indian music from North or South-Chinese-Japan-Africa ) |
