Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Jaco Pastorius while playing bass with frets! Outstanding. His band/ensemble is so good, they’re killing it.

New album by Marquis Hill, Sweet Surrender, brings jazz to church. Beautiful, spiritual music. Very creative.

The  group Angine de Poitrine is blowing up all over the internet. I didn’t quite get what microtonal instrumentation was until someone on the internet directed me to look at the multiples of frets on the double guitar fret necks. 

Also in February 2026. The American magazine JazzTimes highlights the duo’s rhythmic precision, their use of microtonality, and the importance of their visual staging . According to La Presse , the group’s 2026 French tour sold out, and several concerts, notably in New York, sold out in minutes.

I was surprised how headbangly funky they can be. Here’s a link to one of their outdoor shows in Quebec where they played a full hour set. Angine De Poitrine - Full Live Concert @ Québec 2025  And it looks like they're outdoors (with heat lamps?) in what can be described as a time of year in Quebec when it’s very cold.

I went from Jaco who plays the electric bass with no frets to Angine de Poitrine who plays with multiples of frets on the double guitar fret necks. Talk about Alternative.

Angine de Poitrine like the name implies is Angina Pectoris (chest pain) lol. Not my flavor, it's just noise to me but music to others and that's what matters. Enjoy
